Wednesday’s national forecast – Unstable afternoon inner NI

Mainly settled for the South Island today, early showers for Nelson and Marlborough clear. The North Island has a frontal band for the lower half withering away in the morning, unstable conditions possible for inland hills and ranges in the afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, occasional showers mainly in the northeast from Bay Of Plenty up through to eastern Northland. Showers spring up for some inland hills and ranges in the afternoon (especially Waikato), some becoming heavy with thunder then clearing later. Showers remain for Northland overnight. Overnight fog for inland areas. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 18 – 21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain (possibly heavy) easing to showers then clearing, afternoon sunny spells. Isolated showers develop in the afternoon for some inland hills and ranges, one or two could become heavy with thunder then clearing later. Overnight fog for some inland areas. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 18 – 22

Eastern North Island

Morning rain Napier southwards, easing to showers and clearing early afternoon before breaking to sunny spells, mostly sunny for Gisborne. Isolated showers for southern Hawkes Bay in the afternoon especially in the ranges with the chance of a heavy fall, clearing at night. Northerly winds, perhaps tending easterly in the afternoon for Hawkes Bay.

Wellington
Rain eases to showers early on, showers clear around midday then a few sunny spells break through as southeasterlies tend northwest.
Highs: 18 – 20

Marlborough & Nelson

Early showers clear then sunny areas increase. Light winds.
Highs: 18 – 22

Canterbury

Mostly sunny, morning cloud Banks Peninsula northwards clears away, some high cloud from afternoon. Light winds tend east to northeast in the afternoon near the coast.
Highs: 16 – 19

West Coast

Partly cloudy, chance of a shower or two. Rain for Buller eases to showers around midday, clearing evening. Overnight fog for Buller mainly inland. Southwesterlies.
Highs: 15 – 17

Southland & Otago
Sun and high cloud, mid level cloud in the evening. Northwesterlies tend breezy westerly around midday for coastal areas however Otago Peninsula northwards sees winds tend easterly in the afternoon.
Highs: 15 – 20
