Wednesday’s national forecast – Front moves away

A front passes over the North Island this morning then mostly passes out to the east this afternoon meanwhile the South Island has a northwesterly airflow. A new front moves into South Westland later this evening bringing heavy rain.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, rain for the Waikato and perhaps Bay Of Plenty, clearing in the afternoon with increasing sunny areas. Northwesterlies change westerly around midday.
Highs: 19 – 22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning heavy showers then easing, clearing around midday. Sunny spells increase. Blustery northwesterlies.
Highs: 15 – 19

Eastern North Island

Morning scattered rain then breaking to mostly sunny weather in the afternoon as northwesterlies tend westerly. Winds for Wairarapa strong at first then easing, picking up again later on.
Highs: 20 – 25

Wellington

Heavy showers before dawn ease, remaining showers clear around midday with sunny spells gradually increasing. Blustery northwesterlies ease then pick up again later in the day with increasing cloud.
High: 18


Marlborough & Nelson
Becoming sunny early morning, evening high cloud. West to northwestely winds, breezy at first for Marlborough then easing, picking up again later in the day.
Highs: 20 – 24

Canterbury

Sunny after any early cloud clears, westerlies tend northerly in the afternoon (northeast near the coast). High cloud increases evening.
Highs: 20 – 23

West Coast
Partly cloudy with a few showers gradually tapering away, heavy rain moves into South Westland evening then pushes northwards overnight. Westerlies swing around to the northeast as the day progresses, strengthening for coastal areas later especially South Westland then winds change west to northwest overnight.
Highs: 16 – 19

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with increasing high cloud, evening rain (more so in the west, heavy about the Lakes District) as a front passes over then northerlies change northwest. Northeasterlies develop for coastal Otago in the morning.
Highs: 20 – 23
