Wednesday’s national forecast

A ridge lies over the North Island today bringing settled weather while a front works it’s way north over the South Island, the front is expected to weaken a fair amount as it moves north. Chance of the odd shower about the lower South Island this morning then overnight drizzle about eastern areas.


Northland, Auckland, Waikato, CNI & BOP

Sunny areas and some cloud with westerly breezes, any morning cloud about eastern Northland and Coromandel clears. A cool start for the Waikato and Central North Island.

Lows tonight: 12-16, 6-8 about the CNI and Waikato

East of the North Island
Sunny skies with light northerly breezes tending more northeast in the afternoon along the coast. Overnight a southerly creeps into Wairarapa bringing cloud.

Western North Island
Cloudy areas with sunny spells at times, west to northwest breezes brisk for a time in the afternoon. Winds change southeast overnight with cloud clearing.

Marlborough, Nelson & Wellington
Sunny weather with west to northwest winds easing off around midday, later in the evening southeasterlies increase about eastern Marlborough and Wellington bringing cloud and the chance of some overnight drizzle.

Canterbury
Mostly sunny weather with light winds, southerlies develop around midday then cloud increases late afternoon. Chance of some evening and overnight drizzle mainly about the foothills.

West Coast
Cloudy periods and the odd sunny spell with southwest breezes, chance of the odd shower too but overall fairly dry.

Otago
Breezy westerlies change southwest by late morning bringing a few brief showers which clear early afternoon. Sunny areas then increase with southwesterlies dying out at night, cold temperatures overnight especially inland.

Cloudy skies for Southland with winds changing cool southwest early in the morning bringing a few showers. Showers clear around midday with sunny areas developing into the afternoon. Cold temperatures developing overnight.
