Wednesday’s national forecast

An anticyclone slowly expands over New Zealand today with it’s centre just west of the South Island, this will gradually bring settled weather to most. A few morning showers about eastern parts of the North Island clear this morning.

Upper North Island

Mostly sunny and clear skies today with south to southeast breezes, a little brisk about Northland at times. Cloudy in Gisborne with cool southerlies and the odd shower clearing in the afternoon.
HIGHS: 22-23, 20 for Gisborne.

Lower North Island

Brisk cold southerlies easing in the evening about Wellington and in eastern areas, cloudy with the odd shower clearing in the afternoon then a few sunny breaks appear. Mostly sunny with some cloud in western regions with breezy south to southeasterly winds, chance of a few brief showers about the central high country at times.
HIGHS: 17-20

Upper South Island

Sunny and clear on the West Coast and about Nelson with light winds, afternoon sea breezes. Morning cloud in eastern areas slowly breaking with sunny areas pushing through by midday, cool southerlies ease dying out in the evening.
HIGHS: 19-22

Lower South Island

Cloudy areas about Southland however sunny breaks increasing from morning elsewhere, clear and sunny about Central Otago after a cold start. Cool south to southwesterly winds ease during the day dying out in the evening.
HIGHS: 17-23

Warmest – Parts of Central Otago and the Waikato

Windiest – Southerlies about Wellington and the east coast of the North Island will be fairly gusty even strong at times this morning however easing late afternoon and evening.

Sunniest – Central Otago, the west coasts of the South and North Island, Nelson, also the Waikato and Auckland.

Wettest – The east coast of the North Island with clearing showers, no heavy rain is expected.
