Wednesday’s national forecast

Mostly fine and sunny across the North Island today with light winds, afternoon sea breezes in coastal areas north of Bay Of Plenty and northern Taranaki. There will be a few areas of cloud between Taranaki and Kapiti with west to northwest breezes.

Mostly fine in Nelson and down along the east coast into Canterbury with light winds increasing from the northwest in the evening near the coast and some high cloud, mild temperatures. Northwesterlies will be strong possibly gusting to gale force at times in inland Canterbury from evening.

High cloud in Otago with breezy west to northwest winds from afternoon, strong in inland areas possibly gusting to gale force at times. Rain spreads into inland western areas in the evening. Strong northwesterlies in Southland gusting to gale force near the coast with high cloud, some scattered rain develops later in the evening as winds tend more westerly.

Cloudy areas in Fiordland from morning with drizzle patches and westerlies, sunny areas further north. Cloud spreads north along the coast in the afternoon and rain develops in Fiordland which becomes heavy in the evening, a few showers spread northwards through to about Greymouth late afternoon.

Temperatures in the high teens across much of the North Island today, mid teen high’s about Taranaki through to Wellington however and southern parts of the Central North Island. High teen temperatures from Otago right up the east coast and through to Nelson, mid teen high’s on the West Coast and about Southland.
