Wednesday’s national forecast

East to northeasterly winds for the North Island today, mostly cloudy in the west with the odd shower at times north of Auckland spreading into Kapiti, Taranaki and the Bay Of Plenty at night. Mostly sunny with some cloud on the east coast, north to northeasterly winds there. High cloud in Wellington with northerlies for most of the day before a few showers move in later in the evening.

Rain on the West Coast of the South Island with northerly winds changing to the west or southwest in the afternoon, rain clearing south of the glaciers by evening. Rain in Southland spreads into Otago in the morning with southerly winds, sunny to start in Canterbury however southerlies in the afternoon bring showers possibly heavy and thundery especially in South and Mid Canterbury.

North Canterbury may remain fairly dry with a late afternoon southwest change bringing cooler temperatures and just a few showers. Marlborough will have fine weather with high cloud, perhaps a few light showers at times from night. Cloudy in Nelson with northerlies and rain.

16 to 17 degrees can be expected north of the Waikato, along the east coast of the North Island and about Wanganui through to Wellington today, mid teen high’s elsewhere. 13 to 14 degrees for Southland, Otago, the West Coast and Nelson, high teen temperatures from North Canterbury northwards along the east coast. For Mid and South Canterbury high’s will be 14 to 15 degrees.
