A northerly airflow lies over the country today, a front passes off to the east of the South Island around midday while it moves more slowly from west to east across the North Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Areas of rain or drizzle, chance of a heavy fall at times. The greater chance of heavy rain comes later in the evening and overnight about Great Barrier Island, Coromandel and Bay Of Plenty. Breezy Northerly winds.
Highs: 17-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Patchy rain mostly clears by midday south of Taranaki although the odd spit may remain, a few sunny areas in the afternoon but still plenty of cloud about. Rain again overnight. Taranaki especially in the north sees morning rain with the chance of heavy falls then easing to drizzle in the afternoon, persistent rain again overnight. North to northwesterly winds.

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud, a few spots of rain possible at times mainly morning then again overnight. Gisborne may see more persistent rain at times late afternoon onwards.
Highs: 19-20

Wellington

Early rain eases to the odd spit, perhaps even a few sunny areas late afternoon. Gusty Northerly winds.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Some morning rain then breaking to mostly sunny weather in the afternoon, overnight further rain moves into Nelson and the Sounds. Breezy north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Canterbury

Any early rain clears then cloud breaks to some sun, North to Nor’East winds.
Highs: 18-19

West Coast

Early heavy rain eases to showers, showers may still have the odd heavy fall however for the rest of the day. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-15

Southland & Otago

High cloud, chance spot of rain late morning then a few sunny areas from afternoon. Northerly winds.
Highs: 14-17
