Wednesday night’s national forecast

A low pressure system churns away overnight over the North Island, a few areas will clear up overnight but heavy rain is likely for some in the east. Snow is also likely about the Central Plateau overnight. The South Island becomes frosty thanks to a ridge of high pressure.

Northland
The odd shower becoming a bit more frequent this evening with possible hail, especially in the west. Showers then easing and maby even clearing up overnight as southwesterly winds tend more southerly.
Lows tonight: 6-8

Auckland & Waikato
Showers, possibly heavy at times with hail clearing this evening. Clear areas increase overnight with south to southeasterly winds. Towards dawn some rain and possible thunderstorms may develop about the Coromandel.
Lows tonight: 3-6

Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy periods with light winds tending southeasterly later, the odd shower also turning to rain around dawn.
Lows tonight: 6-7

Central North Island
Rain about southern parts of the Central North Island (the central Plateau) with snow to 700m. Cloudy spells north of Lake Taupo with the odd shower at times. East to southeasterly winds.
Lows tonight: 1-4

Eastern North Island
Periods of rain, heaviest about northern Wairarapa through to Gisborne. Winds strong from the east or southeast. Snow to 500m in the south then to 800m in the ranges behind Gisborne.
Lows tonight: 5-6

Western North Island
Areas of rain easing to the odd shower this evening, strong gusty southeasterly winds may gust to gale at times especially about southern Taranaki. Snow flurries to 500m about the Tararuas and 800m for Taranaki.
Lows tonight: 5-6

Wellington
Rain eases this evening to the odd shower, snow flurries to 500m. strong south to southeasterly winds gusting to gale force in Cook Strait.
Low tonight: 7

Nelson
Areas of cloud clear this evening, clear skies overnight. Southeasterly winds ease.
Lows tonight: 1-2

Marlborough
Cloudy periods with brisk southeasterly winds easing, rain about the sounds eases to the odd shower this evening. Mainly dry elsewhere apart from the odd shower near the coast. Snow flurries to 400m where there is any precipitation. Southeasterlies about the outer sounds will remain strong overnight gusting to gale force at times.

Clear or becoming clear this evening, frosty overnight with light winds.

West Coast
Clear skies with light winds.

Coastal Otago
Mainly clear although there may be a few clouds about, light winds.

Central Otago
Mainly clear skies, frosty with calm conditions.
Lows tonight: -5- -4

Southland
Clear spells and some cloud with light northerlies.
Low tonight: 2-3
