UPDATE: NZ’s toughest weather spot

It seems many kiwis are ready to put some local forecasters to the sword when it comes to weather reports and on a number of occasions they have every reason to do so.

We know here at weatherwatch.co.nz how much of a challenge it can be and it appears Christchurch is the toughest city with it’s temperature fluctuations and the arrival or non arrival of the infamous Canterbury Nor’ wester which can alter temperatures rapidly.

The southerly sometimes can stall over the Canterbury Plains and a predicted cooler change for the southern city can frustrate forecasters and temperatures can climb much higher than expected due to its delay.

Nor’ easters is the most common breeze in the Garden city and often they are cool to very cool however on the odd occasion the wind can be a light seabreeze and the temperature can be considerably higher than expected.

Thanks so much for your input on your hardest region/city and it appears the mainland overall is slightly tougher than its northern counterpart.

If it is so hard to forcast the weather why does the metservice give us a 8 day forcast. Whole summer I’ve been following that forcast and it is absolut rubbish. They change the sun, cloud and rainsymbols every 6 hours. I have never seen a 8 day good forcast so please let them stop. A 3 day forcast is hard enough so that is more than enough.

I would really like to know which Metservice you are looking at. If you bothered to look properly you would see it is a TEN DAY forecast, not 8.

We understand the forecast is computer generated after 3 days so the changes are frequent.

Thanks
