Tuesday’s national forecast – Unstable West Coast (+8 maps)

A west to northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today bringing showers to western regions, unstable conditions for the West Coast.

Showers for western regions today, the West Coast sees thunderstorms and hail. Showers about Southland and into parts of Canterbury, turning to rain about Otago and perhaps South Canterbury this evening.

Winds are moderate for most, gusty from the northwest through Cook Strait. Temperatures in the late teens or early twenties for most however sticking in the mid teens for parts of the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, there may be a shower or two especially later in the day. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, more so from afternoon. There could be a sunny spell or two, mainly morning otherwise expect a mostly cloudy day. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island

There may be some morning rain, mainly about Gisborne then mostly sunny. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-26

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with a few showers, more so from midday then easing evening. Brisk to strong northwesterly winds.

Marlborough & Nelson

A mix of sun and cloud for Marlborough, a shower may spread from the west in the afternoon. Gusty northwesterlies. Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds area sees showers develop in the morning, chance of an isolated heavy fall in the afternoon then clearing up evening, northerlies.

Canterbury

Sunny areas and increasing cloud, a few showers develop towards midday mainly Banks Peninsula southwards as winds tend southwest. There may be some rain for South Canterbury this evening. Rain or showers clearing at night.

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing evening. Fiordland may dry out in the afternoon. Northerlies.

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy, a shower or two, especially from afternoon as light winds tend southwest. There may be some afternoon / evening rain about Otago.
