Tuesday’s national forecast – Unsettled North Island

A low pressure system brings unsettled weather to the North Island today, especially south of about Waikato. Conditions are mainly settled for the South Island but there are a few showers or areas of rain in the north.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud, a few isolated showers. Showers becoming heavy and widespread in the afternoon with a chance of thunder / hail for Waikato and Bay Of Plenty, easing evening. Light winds, southwesterlies for Northland gradually spread elsewhere by evening.
Highs: 16 – 19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with a few showers, rain develops in the afternoon, chance of a few heavy downpours with thunder / hail about the Central North Island in the afternoon. Rain or showers ease at night. South to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 10 – 16

Eastern North Island

A few showers, rain for Wairarapa, southwesterlies tend to the south in the afternoon. Heavy rain with thunder and hail may trigger in the ranges behind Hawkes Bay and Gisborne in the afternoon. Rain becomes more widespread for Hawkes Bay northwards from evening with heavy falls possible.

Wellington

Showers turn to rain in the morning, easing to a few spits or showers in the evening. Southerlies, fresh and gusty through Cook Strait.

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy for Marlborough with rain developing in the morning, clearing evening. Further west has a mix of sun and cloud, isolated showers develop about the ranges in the afternoon, one or two may become heavy (a low risk of thunder for Tasman), clearing evening. Winds from the south, tending northerly for a time in the afternoon for Nelson.

Canterbury

Some cloud north of Banks Peninsula, showers develop about Kaikoura in the morning, clearing evening. Sunnier further south with morning fog possible then a few clouds in the afternoon. Easterly winds develop by midday.
Highs: 13 – 17

West Coast

Mostly sunny, a few clouds build about the ranges with the chance of an isolated shower in the afternoon / evening, clearing later on. Light winds tend west to southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 16 – 20

Southland & Otago
Partly cloudy, any morning fog clears. Drizzle or a shower possible later in the day as cloud thickens. Light southeasterlies, east to northeasterly winds for coastal Otago.
Highs: 13 – 16
