Tuesday’s national forecast – Cold air incoming

A series of cold fronts push northwards over the country today, rain or showers for western regions and in the south. Rain pushes up the east coast of the South Island also with a strong southwest change.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, the odd shower, more so in the west. Rain in the evening as northwesterlies change southwest. Rain eases overnight.
Highs: 17-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, afternoon rain moves through then easing back to showers in the evening. Gusty northwesterlies change to the south overnight.
Highs: 10-15

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny, cloud develops in the afternoon with some rain south of about Napier as a front passes over, skies clear up in the evening. Overnight showers for Wairarapa as winds change to the south.
High: 16-22

Wellington

Partly cloudy, a few spits, perhaps showers in the afternoon as a front passes over then drying out in the evening. Overnight showers as strong northwesterlies change to the south.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny, showers early to mid afternoon for Nelson, spits for Marlborough as a front passes over. Gusty northwesterlies.
Highs: 14-16

Canterbury

Sunny, northwesterlies. Mid to late afternoon a gusty southwest change moves through (gales develop about the coast) bringing showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail, clearing overnight. Snow may get as low as 400m in the evening.
Highs: 12-18

West Coast

Rain, thunderstorms and hail possible, easing to showers in the evening as fresh northwesterlies change southwest. Showers clear overnight. Snow falls to 400m for Fiordland, 700m in the north.
Highs: 9-13

Southland & Otago
Partly cloudy, a few spits of rain then heavy showers and small hail around midday for Southland, afternoon for Otago as northwesterlies change cold southwest, showers ease evening. Snow to 400m, possibly as low as 300m in the evening as showers ease.
Highs: 8-13
