Tuesday’s national forecast

Showers over much of the North Island today but dry spells too, a few of those showers may be heavy. Winds will be gusty from the west or southwest. About Bay Of Plenty particularly in the east expect sunny areas and some cloud, remaining mostly dry. Sunny with some cloud in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne with breezy westerlies. Later in the evening another surge of showers will move onto western areas of the North Island with showers possibly heavy and thundery with hail.

Becoming fine and sunny in Otago and Canterbury with southwesterlies easing in the morning, a southwest change moves through Otago just after midday reaching about Christchurch by evening bringing another period of showers possibly heavy at times with some hail. Showers clear late morning near the coast in Marlborough with southwesterlies easing in the afternoon, sunny breaks otherwise. At night southwesterlies develop with a period of showers possibly heavy with hail mainly near the coast.

Expect scattered showers for most of the day along the West Coast with cool southwesterlies, dry spells too with some sun in the mix. Sunny breaks in Southland to start with westerlies, showers by late morning however with some hail as southwesterlies freshen. Winds tend westerly again in the evening in Southland becoming strong.

14 to 15 expected over most of the North Island today, 15 to 16 in the Bay of Plenty and high teen temperatures north of Hawkes Bay on the east coast. 13 to 15 degrees expected north of Westport on the West Coast, about Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. 11 to 12 degrees elsewhere in the South Island.
