Tuesday night’s national forecast

A cold southerly airflow works it’s way up the South Island this evening, bringing some snow in the east to around 300 to 400m. Skies clear overnight on the West Coast. For the North Island a frontal band and associated low pressure system move in from the west bringing rain and possible thunder, snow looks likely to fall about the Central Plateau overnight above 600 to 700m.

Auckland, Northland, Bay Of Plenty & Waikato
Rain develops later this evening, possibly heavy about Northland and Auckland with northerlies, rain eases to showers overnight with a southwest change. Further south expect rain to develop later tonight with northerlies, rain could be heavy about the Bay Of Plenty and potentially thundery especially in the east towards dawn.
Lows tonight: 6-7

Central North Island
Becoming cloudy this evening, rain develops overnight with east to northeast winds. Snow to 700m possibly 600m at times then easing around dawn.
Lows tonight: 1-4

Eastern North Island
Mainly clear skies with some high cloud about the Wairarapa. Southerlies develop later this evening about Wairarapa with rain and snow to 500m. Scattered rain develops further north overnight.
Lows tonight: 4-6

Western North Island
Rain moves into Taranaki this evening, heavy at times with a risk of thunder then spreads elsewhere overnight. Northerly winds change southeast later. Snow to 700m.
Lows tonight: 4-5

Wellington
Cloudy skies, the odd shower possible then rain develops late this evening becoming heavy. Winds change southeast overnight. Snow develops to 500m.
Low tonight: 6-7

Nelson
Some overnight rain with snow to 500m in the ranges, southeasterlies develop.
Lows tonight: 3-4

Marlborough
Rain develops this evening with southerlies which strengthen overnight, snow to 400m. Rain may be heavy for areas north of about Blenheim.
Lows tonight: 3-4

Canterbury
Rain or showers for inland areas with snow to 400m spreading towards the coast by evening. Snow level lowering to 300m overnight, possibly 200m at times. There could be some smail hail. Winds from the south or southwest.
Lows tonight: 0-3

West Coast
Any remaining showers clear this evening and skies becoming clear overnight with high cloud to the north dissapating. Southeasterlies.
Lows tonight: 1-3

Coastal Otago
A few wintry showers develop this evening with cold southerlies, a few snow flurries to 200m overnight then clearing by dawn tomorrow.
Low tonight: 3

Central Otago
Clear spells and some cloud, light winds tend southerly.
Lows tonight: -3- -2

Southland
Cloudy spells with the odd shower and a few snow flurries to 300m then clearing overnight, southerly winds.
Low tonight: 1-2
