Thursday’s national forecast – Very heavy rain West Coast

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today bringing heavy rain in the west, winds strong and blustery in the east from the northwest. There is the potential for unstable showers in the south from afternoon. A northwest airflow for the North Island with a few showers in the west, dry warm weather in the east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty Partly cloudy with a shower or two, more so morning for Auckland then the rest of the day for Waikato. Northwesterly winds, a bit breezy after midday especially in the west.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas with showers, especially for Taranaki / Kapiti and Palmerston North. Rain develops evening. Blustery northwesterlies, strong for coastal areas.
Highs: 17 – 21


Eastern North Island
Sun and increasing high cloud, late afternoon or evening rain for Wairarapa then spits further north overnight. Northwesterlies, strong for Wairarapa.
Highs: 20 – 27


Wellington
Cloudy with spits of rain or showers, especially from afternoon. Gale northwesterlies.
Highs: 16 – 17


Marlborough & Nelson
High cloud, rain moves into Nelson during the afternoon with spits spreading into Marlborough. Gusty northwesterlies become strong in the evening for Marlborough, expect gales for Farewell Spit and the outer Sounds. Winds change to the southwest for a time in the afternoon for Nelson.

Canterbury
Heavy rain in the high country, a few spits may spread further east, sun and high cloud in the east otherwise. Gusty northerlies tend northwest late morning. Overnight winds change southwest with showers

West Coast

Heavy rain and thunderstorms, rain turns to heavy showers and possible thunderstorms this afternoon, hail possible too especially down towards South Westland. Gusty northwesterlies change westerly in the morning, reverting to the northwest in the afternoon then changing southwest overnight. Snow lowers to 400m at night for Fiordland.

Southland & Otago
Early heavy rain for Central Otago eases, sunny spells otherwise. Isolated heavy showers develop for Southland in the morning as gusty northwesterlies change westerly, heavy showers don’t reach coastal Otago till late afternoon or evening, thunder and hail possible from afternoon. Snow to 700m for Southland lowering to low levels overnight, snow to 400m overnight for Otago. Winds change southwest at night.
