Thursday’s national forecast – Hot temperatures

A high pressure systems covers New Zealand today bringing settled and very hot weather to some, especially the eastern South Island. However relief is on the way as a cold front moves onto the lower South Island this evening then moves northwards overnight.

North Island

Mostly sunny weather, some morning cloud for the upper North Island though then breaking to sunny spells this afternoon. This evening cloud may thicken for Bay Of Plenty and Northland. Light winds this morning then afternoon sea breezes. Northerlies through Cook Strait becoming gusty perhaps strong.

South Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud for Southland and Otago, the airflow is generally from the west or northwest, northerlies for Marlborough become a little breezy this afternoon, light winds in the east. Very hot temperatures for eastern regions this afternoon. Fiordland has cloudy skies with a few showers then turning to rain this evening. Rain moves into Southland this evening with a southwest change then moving into Otago around midnight. Southerlies ramp up for Canterbury overnight perhaps strong about the coast with cloud thickening and a few showers or drizzle patches moving in.
