Thursday’s national forecast

A humid north to northeasterly airflow lies over the country today. Expect areas of rain about the North Island, heaviest in the northeast. A few heavy falls possible late afternoon and evening about Auckland and parts of the western North Island from Taranaki through to Kapiti, mainly in the ranges. The South Island sees some rain about Nelson and Marlborough, isolated showers develop in the afternoon about Canterbury especially inland with a few heavy falls possible.

Northland
Morning rain eases then clears, sunny spells then break through to a mostly
sunny afternoon with warm temperatures. Later in the afternoon a few isolated
heavy falls may pop up with thunderstorms about southern parts of Northland then
clearing in the evening.

Auckland

Morning rain eases clearing around midday, a few sunny spells then break
through. Later in the afternoon a few isolated heavy falls may pop up to the
north of the city with thunderstorms (then drifting south), clearing later in
the evening.

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of
Plenty

Periods of rain with heavy falls at times about the Bay Of Plenty, humid
northeasterly winds. Rain eases off in the evening to the odd drizzle
patch.

Eastern North Island

Cloudy with showers at times and breezy humid northeasterly winds, easing
evening.
Highs: 23

Western North Island

Morning showers clear with sunny spells developing, a few further isolated
showers later in the afternoon with the risk of heavy fall and thunderstorms in
the ranges. Humid northerly breezes. Taranaki sees rain at times for much of the
day then clearing evening with breezy humid northeasterlies, risk of a heavy
afternoon fall, sunny spells in the PM too.

Wellington

Morning showers clear with sunny spells developing, a few further isolated
showers possible later in the afternoon with the risk of heavy fall and
thunderstorms in the ranges. Humid northerly breezes.
Highs: 21-23

Nelson

Rain, easing during the morning and clearing in the afternoon.
Northeasterly breezes. There may be a few clear spells later in the day.
Highs: 21-22

Marlborough

Morning rain clears with sunny spells developing, a few further isolated
showers possible in the afternoon otherwise mainly dry. North to northwest
breezes.
High: 25

Canterbury

Morning cloudy areas with the chance of some drizzle which clears,
afternoon sunny spells and humid northeasterly breezes along the coast. North to
northwesterly winds further inland. Afternoon and evening a few isolated showers
may get going about inland areas where thunderstorms
are possible for a time before clearing later.

West Coast

A few morning showers clear then expect sunny spells and northerly breezes.
Chance of an afternoon shower about the ranges, mainly Buller. Warmest
temperatures inland.
Highs: 21-24

Coastal Otago

Cloudy areas morning and night with mostly sunny weather during the day,
east to northeast breezes. Isolated showers inland with the chance of a thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening.
Highs: 18-20

Central Otago

Mostly sunny with some high cloud at times, light northerlies. Isolated showers with the chance of a thunderstorm in the east later this afternoon and evening.
Highs: 24-28

Southland

Mostly sunny with some high cloud and light winds, tending southerly in the
afternoon. Chance of a late afternoon and evening isolated showers, mainly
inland.
Highs: 22-23
