Thursday’s national forecast

The country is covered in plenty of cloud today thanks to a weak frontal system in the far south and in big part to a depression just northwest of the North Island. A band of rain will start to move onto the upper North Island today, elsewhere is mainly dry although a few areas may see some drizzle.

Northland
Brisk to strong easterly winds. Cloudy with patchy rain becoming more persistent by midday. Rain may be heavy at times afternoon onwards, mainly in the east.

Auckland
Cloudy with drizzle patches, rain moves in during the afternoon. Brisk easterly winds.
High: 15

Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy with the odd drizzle patch at times, easterly winds build. Rain moves in during the evening.
Highs: 15-16

Waikato
Mostly cloudy with easterlies breezes, picking up in the afternoon. Drizzle late afternoon then late evening rain.
High: 14

Central North Island
Thick high cloud, light east to northeast winds. Scattered rain moves in overnight.
High: 12

Eastern North Island
Mostly cloudy skies with northeasterly breezes, the odd drizzle patch at times for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne from afternoon but expect dry areas too.
Highs: 14-15

Western North Island
Plenty of high cloud with light winds tending easterly, cloud thickening and lowering in the evening. About northern Taranaki expect cloudy periods, winds a moderate breeze from the east.
Highs: 14-15

Wellington
Mostly cloudy with northerly breezes changing southerly in the afternoon. Skies more or less becoming totally cloudy in the evening.
Highs: 13-14

Nelson
Plenty of high cloud with light winds, some general cloud develops in the evening.
High: 14

Marlborough
High cloud in the morning with light winds, lower level cloud gradually increases from midday as winds tend southerly. Overnight drizzle is possible.

Canterbury
High cloud to start with light winds, light southerlies develop by midday however with general areas of cloud increasing. Some overnight drizzle is possible.

West Coast
Sunny spells and some cloud, light winds.
Highs: 12-13

Coastal Otago
Some light morning rain or a drizzle patch, mainly south of about Dunedin then clearing. Skies remaining mostly cloudy with east to northeast breezes.
High: 10

Central Otago
High cloud with light winds, a few sunny areas developing into the afternoon.
Highs: 11-12

Southland
Morning showers ease then clear, sunny spells increase in the afternoon with light easterly winds.
High: 11
