Thursday’s national forecast

A depression and frontal system form over the South Island today bringing inclement weather while the North Island remains under a weak ridge of high pressure.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, CNI & BOP
Cloudy periods with northerly breezes, odd sunny spell at times. Expect the odd shower now and then too especially about Bay Of Plenty.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island
Sunny spells with increasing high cloud, northeasterly breezes. Rain develops at night about Wairarapa with a southerly change.
Highs: 20-21

Western North Island
Mostly cloudy skies with breezy northerlies, the odd shower about Taranaki from afternoon. Overnight winds change southerly with some rain.
Highs: 18-20

Wellington
High cloud thickening in the morning with northerlies becoming brisk. The odd light shower from late afternoon then expect rain later in the evening. Winds change southerly overnight at which point there could be a few heavy falls.
Highs: 17-18

Nelson
Cloudy with rain developing late morning, winds breezy from the north. There may be a few heavy falls about the Nelson Lakes district in the afternoon. Winds change southerly in the evening and rain eases overnight.

Marlborough
Thick high cloud with breezy northerlies. Some rain develops around midday, winds change southerly in the evening with rain becoming a little more persistent for a time.
Highs: 18-19

Canterbury
Cloudy skies with northeasterly breezes, some rain from afternoon mainly north of about Banks Peninsula with winds changing southwest. Rain clears in the evening.
Highs: 13-14

West Coast
Rain with heavy falls about Buller, expect northeasterly winds. Rain eases to showers south of Buller late afternoon then clears in the evening. Rain about Buller clears overnight. Winds change southerly during the evening for all.
Highs: 15-16

Southland & Otago
Thick high cloud in the morning, light winds tend northerly or northwest. Around midday southerlies pick up about Southland, rain moves in to Southland and Central Otago around then also. Showers move into North Otago during the afternoon. At night showers clear from most places.
