Thursday’s national forecast

Mostly fine and sunny in the North Island today with light winds, a chance of some early morning fog about the Waikato and Central North Island any of which will clear. Isolated afternoon showers develop about Auckland in a line down through to the ranges of Hawkes Bay and areas northeast of there, there is a chance one or two showers may become heavy and thundery about the eastern Central North Island, inland Bay of Plenty and the ranges in Hawkes Bay. A few isolated showers may pop up in Northland also in the afternoon however they will only be brief.

Should thunderstorms form in the areas given above they are likely to take a north to northeasterly track delivering heavy falls for a time about parts of the coastal Bay of Plenty area also in the evening.

Mostly sunny across the South Island with light winds tending north or northeasterly. On the West Coast however there may be the odd morning shower then sunny breaks increasing during the day. In Fiordland skies become cloudy in the afternoon and drizzle develops there in the evening. There may be a little cloud at times along the coast north of Banks Peninsula.

Mild in the North Island today, 16 to 17 degrees is likely about the Bay of Plenty and Waikato northwards, mid teen temperatures elsewhere although a degree or two cooler about Wellington, the east coast and southern parts of the Central North Island. 12 to 13 degree high’s for most in the South Island however a degree or two warmer about Westport, Nelson and parts of Marlborough .
