Thunderstorms: The latest from the rain radar

Widespread showers, many heavy with thunderstorms, are currently spreading over much of Northland.

In Auckland, it finally looks as though heavy rain is about to move in with a band of rain hugging the west coast and moving into Helensville.  It should see some good downpours over the next couple of hours. Behind it, the odd heavy shower with another band of squally showers most likely arriving tonight.

The onslaught of heavy showers continues in Taranaki and that is likely to continue for the rest of the day.

Heavy showers are also affecting a number of areas across Bay of Plenty and East Cape.

As far as other regions, WeatherWatch.co.nz unfortunately cannot report on them.  MetService charges a premium to access rain radar images and currently our resources only allow for access to the Auckland radar.

Here in Kaukapakapa the heavy rain has just passed and so did a funnel cloud. One minute there was no wind the other a funnel cloud came over and the wind picked up dramatically and then all of a sudden the wind dropped again is this normal? Will we have anymore heavy rain for Kaukapakapa?

there were blue skies this morning, but in the last hour the skies have darkened considerably and rain started about 20 minutes ago. Glad I got the weeding done and deck swept earlier!

In the last 5mins the wind has picked up a little here, around the 35km mark at present and it is FINALLY raining although not heavy, hoping we will get enough to fill the water tank a little.
