Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued this evening for the Bay of Plenty, Rangitikei and Ruapehu.
The Government forecaster has released the warnings inside the last hour.

Is there anything showing for North Otago, oamaru and Waitaki?? Looks to be clouds that are rather dark over Weston way

Why have they started issuing forecasts on thunderstorms now? I mean it has been thundering since Noah was a lad and it doesnt do any harm. Isnt this over reporting the weather making us all a bit too sensitive?

The idea of t/storm warnings tends to be when they are severe, accompanied with large hail and strong wind gusts.
Some have mentioned similar points as well but it’s more of an advisory for crop farmers, travellers etc

There’s a possibility but we also see a cluster dissolving quite quickly.
Fingers crossed nature provides a free lighting display for you though at some point!
