The weak low near the upper North Island moves away today while in the South Island the start of a wintry week of weather in the lower half of the island starts later today as a cold front arrives.

NORTH ISLAND:
Low pressure to the north east drifts away today taking showers and cloud with it. Mainly dry with light winds but showers may linger around East Cape and Gisborne but will also clear away. Northerlies pick up in Wellington and becoming cloudier.

SOUTH ISLAND:
Mild and dry to begin with, clouds increasing in the south with rain arriving in Southland, Otago and Fiordland today, then into south Canterbury tonight. It's followed by a much colder south to south west change. Dry and mostly sunny in the north of the island. Warmer than average for most places before the cold change.
