Sunday night’s national forecast

A low pressure system moves away to the east of the North Island overnight while an anticyclone starts to make a move on the lower South Island. Still, showers are expect for many especcially in the east of both islands. The West Coast of the South Island and Nelson are expect to remain dry.

Northland
Showers, heavy for a time this evening in the west as gusty southwesterlies change southerly. Showers then ease overnight.
Low tonight: 6

Auckland & Waikato
Showers, becoming heavy with a risk of hail this evening as strong southwesterlies change more southerly. Showers then ease overnight, clearing about the Waikato.
Lows tonight: 5-2

Bay Of Plenty
Clear to start this evening however some cloud moves in and there may be a shower. Cool southwesterly winds.
Lows tonight: 2-3

Central North Island
Showers south of Lake Taupo with snow flurries lowering to 300m overnight. Cold south to southwest winds. Showers will ease off for a time overnight then pick up again towards dawn. North of Lake Taupo expect cloudy spells and the chance of a shower otherwise fairly dry.
Lows tonight: -1-2

Eastern North Island
Periods of rain, possibly heavy and northern Hawkes Bay and Gisborne then easing overnight. Snow lowers to 300m. Winds strong and gusty from the southwest.
Lows tonight: 2-4

Western North Island
The odd shower with gale south to southeasterly winds, easing a little overnight. A few snow flurries above 300m.
Lows tonight: 4-5

Wellington
Severe gale southerlies easing a little overnight. Showers at times, a few snow flurries above 300m.
Low tonight: 4

Nelson
Clear spells and some cloud, cold south to southwest winds.
Lows tonight: 2-3

Marlborough
Cloudy periods with the chance of a shower or two, could be a few snow flurries above 300m. Cold southerly winds.
Lows tonight: 1-3

Canterbury
Showers with hail at times, snow flurries to low levels then lifting above 400m overnight. Cold southwesterlies.
Lows tonight: 1-2

West Coast
Mainly clear skies tonight, cool gusty southerlies ease.
Lows tonight: 2-4

Coastal Otago
Showers with snow flurries lifting to above 500m by midnight, cold southwesterlies.
Low tonight: 2-4

Central Otago
Cloudy spells with the odd brief shower about the place, long dry periods too. The odd snow flurry lifting above 500m by midnight. South to southwest breezes.
Lows tonight: 0-2

Southland
Occasional showers with southwest breezes, snow flurries lifting to above 500m during the evening.
Low tonight: 4
