Storm slams Dunedin and Invercargill, heading north

Stormy weather has tonight hit Southland with gale force winds in Invercargill gusting up to 110km/h in the city and Dunedin also getting gales and now reports of snow.

The nasty weather is accompanied by a bitterly cold wind chill a few degrees below zero and now rain.

Winds are gusting to 130km/h on exposed parts of Stewart Island and readers are now reporting strong winds and snow in Dunedin. says Dunedin has gale force westerlies, 3 degrees and gusts over 90km/h.  The feels like temperature, or wind chill, is a bitterly cold -6.

Gore has a ‘feels like’ temperature of -5.

This next southern assault is likely to bring snow flakes back in to Invercargill although says it will not be a repeat of Saturday’s huge snow fall.

Christchurch also has strong winds gusting to 70km/h. says the front is now moving into Canterbury and up the West Coast and will hit the lower North Island after midnight.

In the North Island near gale force winds are hitting New Plymouth and inland Hawkes Bay.  Gales are also affecting the Manukau Heads, 15kms west of Auckland Airport, however conditions are much calmer in Auckland city.

This afternoon damaging gale force winds gusting to 110km/h hit the city but as of 10:30pm winds were fairly light, reaching only 48km/h in gusts.
