Rain warnings issued for northern & western NZ

Cloudy and drizzly conditions continue to affect northern and western New Zealand while southern and eastern areas, particularly in the South Island, remain dry and hot. 

The government forecaster has today issued the first of what could be a number of rain warnings as a slow moving rain maker with sub-tropical connections stalls over New Zealand on Wednesday – and lasts until Friday for some areas.

Heavy Rain Warnings

NORTHLAND:
The hills and ranges north of Whangarei Rain is expected to become persistent and heavy Wednesday afternoon. In the 18 hours from midday Wednesday to 6am Thursday, expect 80 to 120mm of rain. Peak intensities of 15 to 20mm/hr expected Wednesday evening and overnight Wednesday.

TARANAKI:
Mt Taranaki Rain is expected to become persistent and heavy Wednesday afternoon. In the 18 hours from midday Wednesday to 6am Thursday, expect 80 to 140mm of rain. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr expected overnight Wednesday.

MARLBOROUGH:
The Richmond and Bryant Ranges Rain should become persistent and heavy overnight tonight. In the 30 hours from midnight Tuesday to 6am Thursday, expect 150 to 200mm of rain. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr expected Wednesday evening and overnight Wednesday.

NELSON & NELSON LAKES
The northwest ranges of Nelson. Rain should become persistent and heavy overnight tonight. In the 30 hours from 9pm Tuesday to 3am Thursday, expect 230 to 280mm of rain in the ranges west of about Motueka. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/hr expected late Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening. Note, the remainder of Nelson may receive 70 to 120mm of rain during this time.

BULLER
The ranges of Buller, including the Paparoa Range. Rain should develop this evening, and become heavy Wednesday morning. In the 18 hours from 6am Wednesday to midnight Wednesday, expect 80 to 120mm of rain. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr expected late Wednesday morning and afternoon.

WESTLAND

 Westland south of about Otira Rain should develop this evening and become heavy Wednesday morning. In the 24 hours from 3am Wednesday to 3am Thursday, expect 130 to 180mm of rain. Note, some of the higher peaks may receive 180 to 250mm of rain during this time. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/hr expected Wednesday morning and afternoon.
