Rain warnings extended, but sunny for some

Rain warnings have today been issued however the complicated nature of this system means nearby regions have blue sky and no rain.

In Auckland today northern and western regions are fairly dry and sunny while rain and showers have frequently affected southern areas.  The narrow band of heavy rain has prompted MetService to issue a rain warning for Coromandel Peninsula saying rain could get even heavier tonight.

“Rain with some heavy falls are already affecting the Coromandel Peninsula, but periods of heavy rain are forecast to become more frequent from this evening. In the 21 hours from 6pm Thursday evening to 3pm Friday afternoon, expect 100 to 150mm. Heaviest falls are likely Thursday night and Friday morning, with rainfall intensities of 25 to 30mm/hr” says MetService. 

And this afternoon MetService has added Bay of Plenty and Rotorua to the above warning.

Northern Hawkes Bay and Gisborne also have rain warnings:

Gisborne

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay north of Wairoa Rain is forecast to become heavy late this morning. In the 15 hours from 9am Thursday to midnight Thursday, expect 80mm to 120mm.Heaviest falls are likely from late afternoon with rainfall rates of 20 to 25mm/hr.

Hawkes Bay

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay north of Wairoa Rain is forecast to become heavy late this morning. In the 15 hours from 9am Thursday to midnight Thursday, expect 80mm to 120mm.Heaviest falls are likely from late afternoon with rainfall rates of 20 to 25mm/hr. Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Ranges of Hawkes Bay from Wairoato Hastings Rain is forecast to become heavy this afternoon. In the 12 hours from midday Thursday to midnight Thursday, expect 60 to 100mm. Heaviest falls are likely in the evening with rainfall rates of 20mm/hr
