Rain – Final thoughts

This morning we thought we’d take a look at the final stages of the current rain event.
Parts of the central North Island have seen clusters of showers throughout the night with isolated showers over remaining North Island districts.

The South Island has been mostly dry overall.

Last night we posed a question about whether the rain was sufficient for or just a trickle.

We got some varied replies and it seems some parts of the country are still thirsty but others believe enough is enough.

Katrina was the first to give a reply “more in palmy north please…..i thought it had been really good but i just planted a lemon tree before and the soil was only wet on top – still really dry down further.”

Rowan commented “53.4 mils in last 2 days or so in nelson , more would be good .more next week i see.”

Kat wasn’t satisfied “More please, that last lot all ran down the massive cracks and disappeared. Ideally a week of heavyish drizzle to close all the gaps in the ground, and soak in so the grass can hopefully recover.”

Brian wanted a bit of a helping hand “a follow up period of rain is what is now needed, preferably inside 2 weeks…can you order that up someone?.”

One reader said they wanted more as well..”I guess we need more rain – but a day of drizzle every 2-3 days would be nice. Unfortunately, with the heavy amount we had on sunday – dirt turned to mud and I have to lock horses out of paddocks to protect the precious grass that is starting to green up.”

Nathalie posted”my washing has been rinsing on the line for the last three days so maybe some sun to retract the orangutan arms on my shirts!”

Helen has seen plenty…for now “Enough for a week or so. Had 110mm in rural South Wairarapa.”

Peter said his farm had seen nearly 140mm in the Wanganui district and it was overload and nothing now for a few weeks please.

Beverly said “Had plenty in inglewood, filled up our water tank.”

Thanks for your contributions and overall there’s been a mixed response as this rain system was a bit of a hit and miss affair.

Today conditions are largely dry with still a few showers possible over the northeast of the North Island however sunshine over the south looks set to be around for a few days before it spreads north.
