New Year’s Eve Weather

UPDATE: 7am New Years Eve

A front has cleared off the North Island and has left behind sunny areas and some cloud with a small risk of a shower initially this morning. Over the South Island however a a nor’ wester builds with rain on the West Coast and dry weather with high cloud out east.Some rain is possible in the far south this afternoon following yesterdays thunderstorms around Dunedin.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Central North Island and BOP
Thie chance of an early shower but conditions drying out and then expect a mostly sunny day otherwise with some cloud. Winds a bit breezy from the west or southwest, especially on western coastlines.

East of the North Island
Some morning cloud with sunny areas increasing otherwise blue skies expected. Winds becoming blustery from the nor’ west later.

Western North Island
A mix of sunshine, some cloud and a few showers this morning with brisk westerly breezes. Any showers drying up as the day rolls along.

Nelson & Wellington
Sunny areas and some cloud possible, northwesterlies pick up during the day gusting to gale force from afternoon about Wellington.

Canterbury & Marlborough
Sunny weather with thickening high cloud, northwesterlies pick up and becoming gale force over inland areas.
Highs: 23-27

West Coast
Overcast with showers at times turning to rain over Westland and Fiordland with breezy westerlies, some heavy falls and thunderstorms possible at times .
Highs: 18-19
(90% chance of precipitation)

Southland & Otago
A few showers possible early and then mostly dry weather with thick high cloud, strong and blustery west to northwest winds. This afternoon some light rain possible spreading off the western ranges with windy nor’ westers continuing.
