More heavy rain and gales on the way

The unsettled weather will continue tomorrow and for the next few days across the country with heavy rain in the west of both islands and strong to gale winds to the north and east.

Across the North Island the isobars will continue to bunch up Thursday meaning strong to gale force nor’westers in a number of eastern places – possibly severe gale in Hawkes Bay where MetService says they have “moderate confidence” of issuing weather warnings.

Strong winds are also likely to affect Auckland and Northland.  The strong nor’westers mean more warm weather is on the way.  Yesterday Kaikoura made it to 19 degrees and today may see Hawkes Bay reach 20, not bad for the middle of winter.

Meanwhile heavy rain will continue along the west coast of New Zealand with heavy rain expected in both islands tomorrow.  MetService believes there’s a high risk of heavy rain from about Waitomo to the South Island’s West Coast.

As the windy and unsettled weather continues across New Zealand it means at least 3 or 4 frost-free days for most places.  The weekend sees more showers, rain and wind for many places with settled weather not in the forecast for at least the next 7 days according to the Weather Watch Centre.

Calm, mild, and slightly overcast on Auckland’s North Shore right now (9.45am) but the clouds are moving very briskly above. First morning for a long time that we’ve not turned the heat pumps on. Cannot believe our 2-yr-old slept through the huge booms of thunder that woke the rest of us up in the early hours. A short but very noisy storm.

Barometer steady @ 988 all night and still the same, winds have been gusting 25 to 30 knots all night and still are, blue South Canterbury skies with lots of sun shine, temperature 10+. If you didn’t have to go outside you’d think it was a beautiful day. PG

Around 11.30pm we had sudden gusty wind, following by thunder and lightening, very fast moving last around 10mins at the most, then heavy rain for a time. 30mins later it was dead calm with the calmness being shattered by another large flash of lightening and rumble of thunder. The rest of the night was calm as. This morning is mild, cloudy and damp with the sun getting a peek through the clouds when it can.
