Sunny areas and increasing high cloud in the east, overnight spots of rain spread from the west. North to northwesterly winds strengthen through Cook Strait rising to gale from afternoon.

Heavy rain for Fiordland from this morning then reaching Buller later this afternoon, rain starts clearing about Fiordland from this evening as winds tend southwest. Nelson and Marlborough see thickening high cloud, some rain spreads into Nelson later this afternoon from the west then reaching into Marlborough. High cloud for the east coast with northerlies, rain spreads into Southland this morning, reaching Otago this afternoon then Canterbury this evening with southwesterlies. Snow possible to 600m overnight for Southland and Otago.
