Monday’s national forecast

A front moves onto the South Island today bringing showers to the far south while a ridge hangs over the North Island bringing mostly settled weather.

Upper North Island

Mostly sunny today with light winds tending more southwest in the afternoon especially out west. Northerly breezes about the Bay Of Plenty and winds tend northeast for Gisborne, eastern Bay Of Plenty may see isolated showers later in the afternoon too.
HIGHS: 23-26

Lower North Island

Sunny and warm out east with northeasterly breezes easing in the evening, west to northwest winds out west with sunny and cloudy areas. Brisk north to northwest winds for Wellington with sunny weather and some cloud, winds change southerly at night.
HIGHS: 22-26

Upper South Island

Mostly sunny in Nelson and on the east coast with northwesterly winds. A change to cooler southerlies about Canterbury during the afternoon then Marlborough later at night may bring some cloud, cloud more likely later in the night. Sunny areas at first in the morning on the West Coast however becoming cloudy by midday with northwest breezes, a few showers move in at night.
HIGHS: 21 on the West Coast, 25 for Nelson and high 20’s out east

Lower South Island

Winds change cool southwest about Southland later this morning with a period of showers possibly heavy and thundery then clearing in the afternoon. A similar pattern happens for Otago however expect some high cloud at first in the morning then showers will move during the afternoon however showers are not likely to be thundery, wet weather clears in the evening.
HIGHS: 21-26

Warmest – East of the South Island north of Canterbury

Windiest – Northerlies about Wellington may get strong at times.

Sunniest – Top of the South Island, eastern parts of the North Island and north of Waikato

Wettest – Fiordland this morning with a period of rain.
