Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

COOL TEMPERATURES, WARMEST IN BAY OF PLENTY

A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today so most regions are not all that warm, we are heading towards winter after all. Bay Of Plenty and eastern Northland being sheltered from these conditions has the warmest temperatures in the early twenties.

RAINFALL OUTLOOK

The outlook for the next seven days is wetter in the west and drier weather out east, the West Coast in particular has more rainfall forecast to fall than the statistical average thanks to most of our weather moving in from the west. If anything it signals that our La Nina weather pattern has really wound down and the El Nino pattern perhaps is gaining strength.

TEMPERATURES WARM UP IN THE EAST ON TUE / WED

Yes it is a bit cool today, a southwesterly airflow will do that. But as the airflow tends to the northwest over Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures will start to perk up a little. We can’t expect overly warm highs but Tuesday has a high of 20 degrees for Canterbury then a high of 22 on Wednesday, this versus a high of 16 today.

Southwesterlies freshen up the east coast of the South Island on Thursday so it may be warm to start then cooling down as the day progresses.

The upper North Island shines more in winter and consistently has warmer temperatures during the day than further south.
