A gusty northwesterly airflow lies over most of New Zealand today although a ridge hangs onto the far north, a front moves onto the lower south this evening which pushes northwards overnight. A weakening front moves off the top of the South Island then onto the lower North Island in the afternoon on Wednesday, northwest winds ahead of the front and changing to the southwest in behind. A front reinvigorates about the lower North Island on Thursday while further frontal activity moves out of the Tasman Sea onto the lower South Island in the afternoon.
Blue – Areas of heavy rain develop about Fiordland in the morning pushing a little further northwards from afternoon. Some heavy rain possible about Southland for a time in the evening.
Purple – Northwesterly winds picking up about the east of the South Island and through Cook Strait from afternoon becoming gusty down to the coast, perhaps strong for inland areas.
Yellow – High’s in the late 20’s or early 30’s for the areas marked below, early 30’s most likely about eastern New Zealand.
Blue – Heavy rain about North Westland eases away in the afternoon.
Purple – Strong northwesterlies through Cook Strait gusting to gale at times ease later in the evening.
Yellow – Temperatures reaching into the mid 20’s for parts of the North Island marked below, late 20’s for the eastern North Island and some parts of Northland.
Blue – Rain becoming heavy about the lower North Island in the west during the afternoon then easing later in the evening. Heavy showers and thunderstorms possible about Fiordland from afternoon.
There may be a few heavy isolated showers afternoon / evening about Southland and Otago.
Yellow – High’s in the mid to late 20’s for Auckland northwards and the Gisborne region.
