Friday’s national forecast – Unsettled day, snow SI high country

A front passes over New Zealand today moving in from the west. Expect rain for all regions, starting to clear up about some eastern regions this afternoon. Some heavy snow is possible this morning for the South Island high country south of Mid Canterbury.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain (possibly heavy in spots), easing to showers in the afternoon as northeasterlies tend to the north. Sunny spells start to break through from afternoon.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain (possibly heavy about Taranaki and the Central North Island) easing to showers around midday as northeasterlies tend to the north, rain with a chance of further heavy falls and thunder moves back in in the evening as northwesterlies freshen.
Highs: 15-18

Eastern North Island

Morning rain, easing to spits in the afternoon and some sun breaks through as northeasterlies tend more to the north. Rain pushes back into Wairarapa in the evening. Gusty northwesterlies overnight.
Highs: 17-19

Wellington

Morning rain (possibly heavy) easing to showers as breezy northeasterlies tend to the north. There could be a few sunny spells in the afternoon otherwise mostly cloudy, some rain moves back in in the evening with northwesterlies rising to gale.
Highs: 16-18

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain with heavy falls, easing to showers around midday, sunny spells may break through as winds tend north to northwest. Rain or showers push back in during the evening from the west.
Highs: 13-16

Canterbury

Rain, possibly heavy about inland Mid and South Canterbury then easing and clearing in the afternoon as northeasterlies tend northerly, high cloud remains and rain continues up in the high country. Snow about the high country of Mid and South Canterbury to 700m in the morning with heavy falls then lifting afternoon. Snow may get as low as 400m.

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls, easing for a time around midday then becoming heavy again in the afternoon as breezy northeasterlies tend northerly. Afternoon rain may have thunder.
Highs: 10-16

Southland & Otago
Rain, conditions start to dry out for Otago from afternoon but remaining fairly cloudy. Rain moves back in overnight. Snow about the Lakes district in the morning to 700m (possibly heavy) then lifting afternoon, snow may get as low as 400m. Breezy easterlies, strong to gale about the coast, easing evening, winds change southerly overnight.
