Friday’s national forecast

Cloudy skies for most of New Zealand today as a low pressure system begins to move over the whole country. Most areas can expect rain or showers too however damp conditions don’t move into eastern parts of both islands till later in the day or overnight.

Auckland & Northland
Cloudy skies with rain moving into Northland in the morning then down to Auckland around midday, there could be a few heavy falls. Brisk northeasterly winds. Rain eases in the afternoon about Northland to showers then later in the evening for Auckland.
Highs: 16-17

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Skies becoming cloudy in the morning. Areas of rain move in during the afternoon and a few heavy falls possible evening onwards, more so about the Bay Of Plenty.
Highs: 12-17

Eastern North Island
Sunny with some high cloud gradually increasing during the day, cloud thickens in the evening then some rain moves in overnight. Northeasterly breezes.
High: 16-17

Western North Island
Mostly cloudy skies with northeasterly breezes, the odd spit of rain from evening becoming more persistent overnight. About Taranaki, especially in the north rain develops in the afternoon and northeasterlies will be brisk.
Highs: 15-16

Wellington
Mainly cloudy skies with northeasterly breezes, rain develops later in the evening.
High: 14

Nelson
Cloudy with east to northeasterly breezes, the odd shower develops during the morning then expect rain from afternoon.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough
High cloud thickening from morning with north to northeasterly breezes. Later in the evening or overnight winds change southeasterly with some rain developing, rain may be heavy.
High: 15

Canterbury
High cloud in the morning with light winds, cloud thickens and lowers in the afternoon with winds changing southerly. There may be the odd light shower about from afternoon otherwise expect fairly dry skies. At night showers move in.
High: 15

West Coast
Morning showers ease becoming few and far between, sunny spells break through at times. Northeasterly winds at first tending southeast early afternoon.
Highs: 15-16

Coastal Otago
Cloudy skies with showers pushing into areas south of Dunedin in the morning then further north in the afternoon with southerly breezes.
High: 11

Central Otago
Periods of rain with light southeasterlies developing in the morning, dry spells at times too.
High: 10

Southland
Showers with southeasterly breezes.
High: 10
