Friday’s national forecast

A ridge lies over central areas bringing fairly settled weather, a low centred offshore to the northeast pulls in a southerly quarter airflow over the North Island. A front moves onto the lower South Island from afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy areas for Northland bring the odd shower, some sun and drier weather possible out east. Morning low cloud or fog possible about Auckland and the Waikato then expect afternoon sunny spells, the odd shower may move into northern Auckland at times. Sunny spells about the Bay Of Plenty. Southwesterly winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with a few showers, mainly south of about Taranaki. Light winds tend south to southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 12-17

Eastern North Island
Cloudy with rain or showers, clearing overnight. Southeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-16

Wellington
Mostly cloudy with showers, clearing in the afternoon. Easterly winds.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy, a few showers mainly in the morning (especially Marlborough). Light winds.
Highs: 14-16

Canterbury
Fairly cloudy, northeasterly winds. Showers overnight with a southwest change.
Highs: 13-15

West Coast
Sunny areas and some high cloud, rain develops about Fiordland by midday. A few showers making their way further northwards later in the evening or overnight. Light winds.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
High cloud with rain developing in the afternoon for Southland, Otago in the evening. Light winds.
Highs: 11-13
