Friday’s national forecast

A front slowly moves over the North Island today, clearing the lower half in the morning then moving through the upper half from afternoon bringing a few showers. A west to southwesterly airflow lies over the South Island, cloudy in the west with the odd shower possible and sunny out east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy, there could be a few sunny areas from afternoon. A few isolated showers are possible late afternoon or evening then clearing away. A few of these showers could turn thundery especially about Northland and inland Bay Of Plenty. Westerly winds tend southwest during the afternoon.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Morning showers clear away then becoming mainly sunny in the afternoon, west to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-21

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud with light winds, sunny areas break through from midday. There could be an isolated shower or two about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne late afternoon / evening then clearing away.
Highs: 23-25

Wellington

Becoming sunny early in the morning, light winds.
High: 19

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny with light winds tending southwest for Nelson, northeasterlies near coastal Marlborough in the afternoon.
Highs: 22-25

Canterbury

A sunny day after any morning coastal cloud clears. East to northeasterly winds, breezy in the afternoon near the coast. Light winds inland with warmer weather.
Highs: 22-24

West Coast

Cloudy areas and occasional sun, west to southwest breezes. Chance of a shower or two otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 16-17

Southland & Otago

Mostly cloudy about Southland with brisk westerly winds, chance of a brief shower or two near the coast otherwise mainly dry. Mostly sunny for Otago, westerly winds inland and light winds near the coast.
Highs: 17-20
