Friday’s national forecast

A front moves over the upper South Island this morning then onto western parts of the North Island this afternoon. Rain for most in the west as this front moves northwards, a few areas of rain spread eastwards also.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy with north to northwesterly winds strengthening. Rain develops mid afternoon possibly heavy then overnight winds change southerly with rain easing to showers.
High: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Becoming cloudy in the morning, some rain from around midday then clearing in the evening with gusty northerlies changing southwest.
Highs: 14-15

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, northwesterly winds build becoming gusty in the afternoon.  A few spots of evening rain possible.
Highs: 17-18

Wellington

Cloudy with brisk to strong northwesterlies, rain from around midday then clearing later in the evening with a southerly change.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson

Cloudy with strong north to northwesterly winds, rain moves during the morning then clearing mid to late afternoon with a southwest change. Skies becoming clear in the evening.
Highs: 14-15

Canterbury

Thick high cloud in the morning with a few spots of rain possible, north to northwesterly winds change southerly mid afternoon bringing cloudy areas and the odd light patch shower.
High: 14

West Coast

Morning rain with heavy falls then easing to showers by midday as breezy northwesterly winds change southwest, showers clear by evening.
Highs: 11-12

Southland & Otago

Gusty westerly winds from morning bring occasional showers which then clear mid to late afternoon. A mostly cloudy day although there may be some sun for a time in the evening before nightfall hits.
Highs: 7-9
