A strong cold southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, showers for some eastern areas. Dry and sunny for the South Island’s West Coast, showers in the west of the North Island mostly clearing this morning.

Cloudy periods and the odd brief shower at times, gusty westerlies tend southwest in the afternoon.

Auckland

Cloudy periods with the odd shower at times, mainly morning. Strong
southwesterly winds ease in the evening.

Bay Of Plenty

Morning cloud with a few showers possible then becoming mostly sunny in the
afternoon, gusty southwesterlies ease in the evening.
High: 24

Waikato & Central North Island

Morning showers possibly heavy then clearing by midday, sunny areas
increase in the afternoon with brisk cool southwesterlies easing in the
evening.
Highs: 19-22

Eastern North Island

Strong southwesterlies develop early in the morning bringing showers, some
of which could be heavy about the Wairarapa and perhaps the Hawkes Bay then
easing. Showers clearing for most by midday with cloud breaking in the evening.
Highs: 20-21

Taranaki

Morning showers possibly briefly heavy then clearing by midday, a few sunny
areas develop in the afternoon especially in the north. Strong southwesterlies
ease overnight.

Western North Island

Morning showers possibly heavy then clearing, sunny areas develop in the
afternoon with cool southerlies easing later in the day.
Highs: 18

Wellington

Early showers possibly heavy then mostly clearing, sunny areas and some
cloud for much of the day with gusty cool southerly winds. There may be a few
further showers overnight.
High: 16

Nelson

Early showers clear then sunny areas develop, southwesterly winds ease
tending light northerly after midday.
Highs: 20-21

Marlborough

A few early showers clear then expect sunny areas to increase, breezy cool
southwesterlies ease in the afternoon then perhaps tending easterly.
Highs: 19-20

Canterbury

Mostly sunny inland with cloud near the coast, gusty cold southwesterly
winds. Showers at times near the coast mainly about Banks Peninsula.
High: 15-16

West Coast

Any remaining early showers clear then becoming sunny, southwesterly winds
ease in the evening.
High: 18-19

Coastal Otago

Strong cold southwesterlies with showers, possibly heavy first thing in the
morning with some small hail then easing afternoon. A few snow flurries to 600m
in the morning also which lift afternoon. Showers clear in the evening and winds
ease overnight.
Highs: 12-13

Central Otago

A few morning showers then clearing, cloud breaks to sunny areas later in
the afternoon or evening with cold southwesterlies then easing.
Highs: 11-12

Southland

Cold southwesterlies with occasional showers, showers clear mid to late
afternoon. Cloudy skies with southwest winds easing overnight. A few light snow
flurries to 700 or perhaps 600m in the morning.
High: 13
