Dramatic skies over Christchurch Friday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A brief southerly change is sparking a series of spring thunderstorms this afternoon across Canterbury and parts of coastal Otago with reports of thunder in Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru and now Christchurch.

A major thunderstorm with hail and torrential rain narrowly missed Christchurch central around 2:30pm, crossing over the Port Hills and just a few kms south east of the city centre.

The storm moved out to sea and many across the city captured incredible photos as the monster cloud rolled by.

Stormchasers, based in Canterbury, has been busy capturing photos of the stormy weather.  You can see other photos by visiting their Facebook page here.

This very dramatic photo was taken this afternoon by Steve at Stormchasers as the main thunderstorm approached the Port Hills.

Stormchasers has a history of capturing some of the most incredible thunderstorm photos and videos in New Zealand – well worth “liking” their Facebook page as we head towards summer.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says more isolated thunderstorms are possible across Canterbury this afternoon but should ease by evening.
