Cold wind keeps lid on temps

Cold air is today continuing to surge over the country keeping temperatures well down.  In particular the wind chill is especially harsh with many places only a few degrees above zero.

The air temperature is between 9 and 11 for many North Island centres as of this afternoon however the wind chill, or ‘feels like’ temperature is closer to 5.  Those who are in sheltered areas out of the wind will be the only places more in line with the actual air temperature.

In the South Island a slight chance from southerlies to more westerly winds means temperatures don’t have the Antarctic chill they had yesterday.  It’s still a pretty cold day however a number of places are now between 10 and 12 degrees, except central Otago which ranges from 5 to 8 degrees.

And don’t expect things to warm up quickly.  A large high is moving in from the Tasman Sea to “lock in” the cold stuff.  WeatherWatch.co.nz is predicting a frosty week this week with severe frosts inland.

Some comp models online suggest another short burst of cold friday/saturday do you have an early opinion on this?

WW Forecast Team on 31/05/2009 11:34pm

We do see some evidence of a burst of cold air across southern and south eastern New Zealand on Friday.  Nothing significant at this stage and our confidence levels would be rated as "low".

Thanks for the question,
