The forecast for Christmas Day is certainly a changeable one, with a high, a low and a couple of fronts to ensure a selection of Christmas weather gifts for the nation!
A weak front will move up the South Island to reach Taranaki and Nelson by noon on Christmas Day. As this front heads further north it will compete with plenty of high pressure, eroding the rainfall amounts and ensuring most places in the North and East of the North Island have a relatively dry Christmas Day. The risk of showers for places like the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Coromandel and BoP increases to 40% by late afternoon…but much of the day is looking dry and warm…with clouds building.
Further South and Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay will have a hot, mainly sunny Christmas Day. Further west and to New Plymouth, morning rain from that front should dry up by late afternoon, so maybe a late lunch outside might be possible.
The wind in Wellington will be a bit of a bugger but wont be severe, just a bit annoying, while over the strait Nelson and Marlborough farmers and wine makers will be thankful for the morning rain, a nice Christmas gift.
In Christchurch those warmer northerlies will turn cooler sou’wester by the end of the day. Maybe a shower or two but it’s not looking too wet…at least not for Dec 25th.
And in southern areas, Dunedin and Invercargill will have a cold westerly or south westerly and showers about. Daytime high only around 14 or 15 degrees, if you’re lucky…so, perhaps pretending you’re enjoying a northern hemisphere Christmas might help…at least Santa wont be sweating when he turns up!
