Weather Forecast for Auckland

Hi there, the weather pattern so far this Autumn has been fairly wet but not as dramatic as last year (which had numerous flood events). As we head towards Winter we're noticing more southerlies so this winter should have more snow and more cold days, especially in the South Island. Seasonal forecasts are often wrong so we tend to look for small trends that may ring true and the uptick in southerlies indicates this winter might have a bit more 'winter weather' in it than previous years. As for wetter, it's appearing wetter than usual in most regions but hard to know how the next 4 months will go as NZ is too small to lock that stuff in. We're certainly seeing a trend of more wet weather in the west (due to many of those southerly wind flows actually tilting more south west).

Looks like a few showers on Saturday morning clearing then expect a mix of sun and cloud. Winds breezy from the southwest. Sunday sees sunny spells and the odd shower, plenty of dry spells too, winds breezy from the west or southwest.

A high of 16 on Saturday, 17 to 18 on Sunday.

Definitely some rain and wind on the way for Auckland, Wednesday could see brisk to strong SW winds. But to have a repeat of the April storm is not looking as likely.

Hey there, thanks for the very positive and supporitve feedback Ken! :) The earlier shift was when we migrated from Wunderground (a network that is being shut down gradually) to The Weather Company. We've had a few issues with local weather stations. Sadly NIWA and Metservice can take tax funding, have public weather stations then stop us from using that data due to their own commercial focus. Minister Woods is currently investigating these issues. We are trying to fine tune the private network of stations which has FAR more than the public system but about 15% of these stations aren't reliable and we're working to pick those out.

We're also working on upgrades to all observations, including new technology which can work out current weather without using one specific weather station (A new IBM product we are trialling internally). We hope to make a few upgrades over the coming 12 months to improve local details.

Hi and thank you very much for your question. 99% of the time Phil and the rest of us at WeatherWatch don't loosely use the word 'stormy' and this indicates a rougher than usual ride for some people over the next week. Auckland, however, is on the high pressure side of the weather so the strong winds won't be so frequent but may occur. For more detailed Auckland forecasts please see the hourly wind speeds in our detailed Auckland forecasts. However we're going to be fine tuning which areas have the strongest winds in the week ahead most likely this weekend in a news update - the chaotic pattern means we need more time than usual to lock it in. The nature of crazy Autumn weather!

Cheers for letting us know and thank you for the kind compliment. We are soon making changes to our weather observations. The most local may not actually always be the most accurate so we're finding that sweet middle ground between local and most accurate. Will be sorted some time in winter. Thanks for letting us know - and sorry for letting you down in this area, it's tough NZ is the only country in the entire western world to not have true open weather data even though we all collectively tax fund it for both NIWA and MetService who won't freely share it back with all New Zealanders. But we're working hard to find an immediate to fix this now thanks to IBM/private sector - meanwhile Minister Megan Woods is also investigating why MetService and NIWA are so commercially aggressive with tax funded data and blocking public commercial access to it. So that's a positive step for positive change - and catchng up with the rest of the developed world.

A few cold changes over the next week or so may bring some snow to the hill tops surrounding Dunedin but mostly only briefly. No low down snow looking likely at this stage.

No, the weather won't be like that. Rain later on Sunday associated with a front may be heavy and winds strong from the northwest however.

Monday next week could see quite strong to gale southwesterly winds for Auckland however so will be something to keep an eye on.

There will be showery weather at times this week and into the weekend. Tuesday may see an isolated downpour or two.

As a front pushes through on Wednesday showers could be heavy in the afternoon for a time. Thursday sees gusty southwesterly winds, perhaps strong at times in the morning then easing from afternoon.

Saturday may see the return of the odd isolated heavy shower then a front later on Sunday / overnight could bring a spell of heavy rain for a time.

That question could have many answers, but yes in general it seems to have been warmer so far this month then it was last year at this time. But many in the South Island will certainly be thinking it's a cold day today.

Hi there, sounds like a great day planned and at least you'll be on the railway tracks and not having to worry about bad drivers holding you up! There is a fair bit of rain around but it's not solid rain all the way from Auckland to Wellington (it's mostly the upper part of the North Island). So we hope you get a good mix of dry areas and higher level clouds for good views. In fact more than half of your trip may well be dry (wettest in Auckland and Waikato). All the best and we hope you get plenty of great photo ops!

Hey there, thanks for letting us know about this bug! What location is it trying to pull data from (ie, where are you). We do have issues with our Observations network at times and we're about 90% through the process of shifting to a new more reliable system, but we can still make fixes the current old Wunderground network (which we still currently display).

I'm not sure of the most efficient way of finding this out but I've found out an indirect method.

When looking at the local station near you on the observation page you'll see a station ID, "ICHRISTC159" for example. If you then use this link:

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=

and chuck the station ID at the end so the link becomes:

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=ICHRI...

It will then take you to a page with more information on that station, not all stations have rainfall information but for the ones that do you can play around with the drop down menus and try find out that info.

Looks like there should be some sun about with areas of high cloud then mid afternoon areas of mid level cloud will start to thicken and lower.
