Hurricane, typhoons

Hello - I appreciate that a hurricane and a typhoon are essentially the same beast at different geographical locations but that makes it confusing to get to grips with relative strengths among them because of different modes of reporting. Hurricane Florence is getting huge coverage but is it really that much more destructive than typhoon Jebi that just hit Japan? Jebi is described as the most severe event there for 25 years. And how does Florence compare with the destructive capability of super-typhoon Mangkhut that just hit Guam and is heading to northern Philippines (or maybe it already hit there?) and the huge populations of southern China, including Hong Kong. Is the coverage of Florence and the effects on people in its path just because the USA shouts the loudest or is it truly that much worse than the two typhoons in Asia?

Hi there, interesting points

Hi there, interesting points raised. Like most news outlets we try to cover stories that our audience wants and without a doubt a major storm hitting the United States garners more interest from the general public than storms hitting eastern Asia, most likely because it's perhaps more relatable with all English products and news updates. We covered Jebi as well and had a surge of interest in it, but this storm approaching the eastern US is unique and has the potential to be incredibly devastating. In saying that, the typhoon is actually more powerful at the moment but there is a greater chance of it being at sea and not slamming populated places. Our relationship with CNN means we can get access to a lot of domestic US weather graphics, which we find much harder to source for eastern Asia. We didn't cover the hurricane that was heading towards Hawaii recently because all our modelling suggested it would be a non-event, which for the most part it was - so it has nothing to do with whoever is 'shouting the loudest' as we make our own independent assessment. So we do tend to weigh up a few things before deciding to cover international news. It was us covering Hurricane Katrina for radio stations in 2005 that actually lead to the set up of WeatherWatch.co.nz a couple years later so we'll always have a close tie in with the US storms due to our connections with US forecasters.

Kind regards and thanks for the questions (and ps, yes totally agree it's very confusing having Typhoons, Hurricanes and Cyclones all with different ways of measuring storm strength, it really needs to have one global bench mark in this day and age).

Philip Duncan

Many thanks for your detailed

Many thanks for your detailed response. I can see that there would be more coverage available from the USA than from Asia and that is really what I meant by the US 'shouting the loudest'. I wasn't intending to put you on the defence, my comments were about media as well - TVNZ, TV3, cover Florence in detail but appear to have nothing on Mangkhut. RNZ has items on Mangkhut but only in the context of the damage in the Northern Marianas, which is ironically part of the USA anyway. Given our proximity to Asia, it would be good to see the media feeling moved to give at least some acknowledgement of the potential damage the Super Typhoon may cause. I was very pleased to see it covered on your video today. For the record, I don't for a moment think you aren't very capable of making an independent assessment, that is precisely the reason why I am a dedicated follower and strong advocate of your forecasts and website! Keep up the good work, kia kaha

Kia Ora and thanks very much

Kia Ora and thanks very much for the great conversation and I sincerely appreciate your messages. A number of people have contacted us on various social media platforms frustrated at the lack of coverage on the Typhoon in many outlets so comments like yours and theirs helped push us to do more in that area (despite the lack of public data in some parts of Asia). With Florence coming in first it's getting the most attention now but Mangkhut should get more general attention by other media outlets over the weekend I'd imagine. A busy 24 few days! Thanks again for the comments and the kind words. Have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Historical weather

Hello. I am trying find weather warnings for New Plymouth on Friday 10th August 2018 and Saturday 11th August 2018. Specifically, lightning strikes recorded. Can you help. Thanks

Hi there, sadly NZ it the

Hi there, sadly NZ it the *only* country in the entire western/developed world to give Government agencies like MetService and NIWA the power to control this data on a *commercial* level - this means we are blocked from openly helping you. In all other western nations we'd be able to help you, quickly and likely at no fee, because we could share data that we all collectively tax fund. In the meantime, please contact MetService or NIWA directly for this information. Both NIWA and MetService now compete directly against each other (imagine if we had two police forces!?). If this frustrates you - as it does us - you can email Minister Megan Woods (as she is currently reviewing this set up following an independent Government review that recently supported our point of view that this is wrong).

Kind regards
Philip Duncan

MetService and Niwa

'By the Otago Daily Times --- Private forecasting company WeatherWatch claims MetService is engaging in ''misleading advertising'' and has taken the state-owned enterprise to the Commerce Commission.' Good luck with that, Philip. Their behaviour is clearly wrong, unjust and borders on the corrupt in my view. Weatherwatch is a great site and deserves to succeed.

Auckland Fri 07 Sep

Here is the TAF - seems diametrically opposed to what you have.... TAF AMD NZAA 060558Z 0606/0706 18012KT 9999 -SHRA FEW025 BKN050 FM062200 22015G25KT 9999 -SHRA BKN050 FM070500 18012KT 9999 SCT050

Hi there, the past 24 hours

Hi there, the past 24 hours have been a bit unusual in Auckland (but the set up makes sense), it's just lingering. Our latest updated forecast shows this patchy rain extending into early Friday then should start to break up and dry out. Cloudy then sunny spells may develop. SE set ups like this in Auckland with 'clunky' lows just off to the east can be frustrating to forecast as a lot of moving parts impact the cloud cover, precipitation and overall movement.

Re: Temerature variations

Hi There, I know there are temperature variations across the different suburbs in Auckland. I'm guessing it's fairly minimal but would you know which suburbs tend to be the coolest in Summer? Thanks.

H there, generally those in

H there, generally those in coastal areas are coolest in summer due to the many various sea breezes. Suburbs that face towards the SW may perhaps be some of the cooler ones, like Hillsborough, Onehunga, Mangere and Piha, or exposed areas like Whangaparaoa. Inland areas, like Henderson, are usually the hottest (as it's in a valley and has ranges to the west which block the cooler sea breezes. Auckland is tricky though as most suburbs have varying terrain so Mt Eden, for example, could be exposed to a cool SWer but other parts sheltered from it too so warmer.

Hi there

That depends where you are staying in New Zealand. Snow to sea level is not looking very likely although this could change. Perhaps overnight Sunday / early morning Monday (2nd/3rd September) may see some snow about the South Island mountain ranges as a cold change moves through.

Auckland rain

Auckland must have by far the worst weather of a main centre in NZ. Will it ever stop raining here? I feel we will need to declare Auckland a drought zone if we ever get a week without rain! I am sick of it - so depressing.

What? This winter has been much warmer, sunnier and drier than usual. May be you should travel a little and experience what happens elsewhere?

Haha - NO!

Water tanks overflowing - ground sodden - it's been a stink winter. North Shore Auckland.

Lol

If you don't like the rain, don't live in a city with a subtropical climate. The winter has been amazing. Yes, it has been wet, but it's winter?! However, it's been a lot warmer than usual.and how many frosts can you remember having this winter? Gold coast is in the dry season in winter if you need an escape ;)

just asking

We're planning to go to Mt. Ruapehu on the 22 August. With the forecast of showers ( 50% chance of rain ), is it worth it ? We haven't been since 2010 and the boys are looking forward to it. Please advise. We live in Wellington. Thanks

Hi there Wednesday next week

Hi there

Wednesday next week is quite far away at this point in time but currently I'm seeing a reasonable chance of showers during the day, meaning wet weather. I won't put a percentage figure on it but I'll say a medium to good chance of showers looking at the situation currently.

Come back and ask closer to time if you like otherwise have a good trip.
