Hi there, yes we feel your

Hi there, yes we feel your pain with this much warmer and drier than average pattern setting in. The good news is that NZ and Australia aren't stuck in any global weather pattern. In Aussie they have major droughts in SA and NSW but recently they've had more than a months rainfall in just a matter of days in some of those states. NZ may get some of this rain this weekend. It's a bit hit and miss for Pukekohe but there are chances of good solid downpours this weekend in the Upper North Island. Keep an eye on our Rain Maps to get a better picture. As for long term - summer can't be locked in but the fact there's no major El Nino or La Nina going on means NZ will be in a 'chaotic local pattern' which means we can truly have anything thrown at us... a few highs could give several weeks of dry, but equally we could get a pattern of rain makers moving in too. Generally speaking NZ is trending dry than average for the next week or two overall nationally but definitely rain makers in the mix for the first time in a while.

Good morning Lyn, thanks for your question. Unfortunately it's a little too far out for us to know yet with any certainty. We won't be able to really lock anything in until the start of November (for about 10 to 14 days out). Ask us again around then :)

Megan Woods

Took some time to read the PWC review regarding M.S. and Niwa last week and also sent The Hon Megan Woods an email regarding their bully boy tactics. I'm just hoping you were able to have a constructive meeting with the minister and if you feel that changes will be forthcoming in regard to accessibility of data? The product you guys are able to provide consistently with the constraints you're facing speaks volumes . Keep fighting the good fight and thanks for all your hard work. Dave Waiheke

Hi Dave, great to see you

Hi Dave, great to see you writing to the Minister. Megan Woods needs to hear from as many people as possible about the anti-competitive and bullying behaviours well documented in these two Government Agencies. Our meeting was positive but the Commerce Commission is refusing to help us currently, despite the Minister assuring us the ComCom was our next step following our meeting with her recentlly. We have held off on explaining it all to the public as we are waiting on a formal letter from the Minister's Office, which we hope to get this month. We've told her we feel the system is corrupted and broken - we repeated that again to Megan Woods Office on Friday after the ComCom were flat footed on what their responsibilities will be moving forward. Frustrating and painful.

Weekend Weather

Hello gents, A few days out I know, but anything nasty lurking/possible for Saturday in Auckland? Hoping for some nice or even cloudy weather.

Hi thereVery latest updates

Hi there

Very latest updates show areas of cloud and occasional sun, may be a brief shower or two about otherwise mainly dry. Winds light from the north, a high in the late teens, possibly early twenties if your lucky.

Saturday morning Auckland

Hi What's the weather looking like for 9am Saturday morning in Beachlands as have some sports coaching? Looks like rain may clear by then? Thanks D

Hi there, tomorrow is a

Hi there, tomorrow is a classic 50/50 forecast with rain in the area but it is clearing away...so timing is EVERYthing! It does look as though it will break up in the morning but whether it happens by 9am in Beachlands isn't 100% known yet. Either way, it doesn't look likely to linger all day but there is a moderate to high chance of early rain or showers. We'll be fine tuning our Auckland update a few times across today, for Saturday. :)

This saturday in auckland

Hey Team, Whats the weather going to look like this saturday in auckland? Hoping to play a bit of cricket in the afternoon.

Hey there, normally a SE wind

Hey there, normally a SE wind does make for a dry day in Auckland but a nearly by offshore trough may encourage rain or showers to linger longer. It's a bit 50/50 but at the moment the chances are weighted towards the day become drier rather than the day becoming wetter as it goes on...so good luck! We'll be fine tuning that Saturday forecast over the next day or so as we try to lock in the timing.

Cheers!

Tauranga South weather

PS to my earlier query - where is Pacific coastal Residential BayofPL89?

Hi Ken,The observations

Hi Ken,
The observations network we display is actually operated by WeatherUnderground and the site has some data being switched off now. On top of that issue, NZ is the only country in the western world to give their forecaster (MetService) the power to commercially block people access to the data they helped fund. So we can't display live tax funded weather observations, instead we switch to the private network (which is actually much more detailed and granular, but it also has glitches, like the one currently affecting you). We are working on a major overhaul of the entire current observations network next year, but in the meantime we'll take a closer look at this issue in your area. As for the weather station above, we can look into it also but please note we do not run this network, or have access to the weather stations - we simply display them.

Cheers
Phil D

Observations re Tauranga

Thanks for your detailed and informative reply. Why does it not surprise me that once again a tax funded govt department can dictate terms. Good luck ... I will keep your site downloaded as my weather guide.

Thank you very much - we are

Thank you very much - we are actually meeting with Minister Megan Woods next week about it, following an independent review by MBIE which pointed out quite clearly how out of the norm the NZ set up is. Thanks for your support, definitely have big positive improvements on the way in the next 12 months to both our website and app.

Tauranga South weather

Did as you suggested - at Weather Watch etc - as far as I am aware Holdens Bay is in Rotorua, and the Airport is at least 21km from Tauranga South! when I first started using Weatherwatch it was taken in Mayfair Street which is about 3 kms from where I live and was 100% accurate.

Tauranga location for weather readings.

Getting dry

It’s incredibly dry in Pukekohe. The Growers are all irrigating their crops, something not usually seen at this time of year... climate change?

Hi there, yes we are seeing

Hi there, yes we are seeing an early November pattern kicking in across New Zealand already. Mostly dry for the week ahead too but hopefully a rainmaker kicks in next week in the north. Definitely a bit concerning and droughts have been declared in both NSW and SA over in Aussie in recent weeks. Can't connect this with climate change at this stage, simply the reality of weather patterns impacting a small nation, but the warmer than average year can be considered part of global climate change.

What is next week looking

What is next week looking like for Auckland? As your maps shows there might be some rain... will it be a serious system?

Hi there Is looking mainly

Hi there

Is looking mainly dry. Just a spell of early clearing rain on Monday then later in the week on Thursday there could be some rain associated with a low slipping southeastwards to the east of the North Island. With its associated southeasterly airflow rain may be not too bad about Auckland but places like Coromandel, Great Barrier Island, eastern Northland and East Cape could be affected with heavy falls. But we'll wait and see, still a while away yet and things could change.

Westport

Hi team, Spring Challenge adventure race is taking place this Saturday in Westport (west coast south island). What's the weather looking like? We're out from 9am-4pmish.... with part taking place on the buller river, over farmland and running on the coastline! Appreciate any info :)

Hi there, you may just be ok

Hi there, you may just be ok :) There is a cold front moving up the West Coast this weekend with heavy slow moving rain but it appears it will be stuck down in Fiordland and South Westland on Saturday and not reaching Westport until Sunday morning. So hopefully a mainly dry day (a few showers) and increasing clouds. Mild northerlies. All the best!

Polar blast

Hello With this incoming weather 2 Questions..1 what are the chances percentage wise for frosts in chch -1 to -5?..2 how come the forecast for next week is showing not that badder weather. Appreciate your warning.. regards

Hi there, Christchurch is too

Hi there, Christchurch is too far north and this is too much of a westerly event for Canterbury to bring you the worst of the weather. Because it will be windy frosts aren't highly likely next week although overnight lows will drop to the low single digits. So probably a 25% chance of frosts at this stage (air is definitely cold enough but probably too breezy). The polar blast will drop temperatures nationwide but Southland, Fiordland, Otago and the West Coast look to be  exposed to the worst of it. The Southern Alps will keep Canterbury mostly dry and sunny next week, except Monday.

No weather station Info

Why is my weather station ITAURANG20 not showing up on the 10 day forecasts as it was the other day,and the live observations map.?

Hi there,Here is our what

Hi there,

Here is our what our technical guy has come back with:

"Forecast pages only show the current conditions from a PWS which is the closest to the user AND has recent data available. Either TWC temporarily couldn't get recent data and so it didn't show it, or it didn't think that was the closest PWS to you. Or, the current closest one was offline and so ITAURANG20 was determined to be the next closest and so that data was being shown.

Also, please note, on the website the location Tauranga, like any location, is taken at an arbitrary point within the town/city, so it currently believes IBAYOFPL89 is the closest. At this stage, only a mobile device can narrow down your location to suburb level to then be able to detect a closer PWS to display data from.

Regarding the live obs page, this still uses a WU data feed, but I can see it there showing data so it's a valid PWS".

Hope that is helpful,
Cheers

total amount of fine weather days for 2018 in rotorua

Hello, I was wondering where you might be able to get the total amount of fine weather days for the year for the rotorua area. Thanks

Hi there Someone wrote in

Hi there

Someone wrote in asking for some historical data just below and this is the responce from Phil Duncan.

"Hi there, sadly NZ it the *only* country in the entire western/developed world to give Government agencies like MetService and NIWA the power to control this data on a *commercial* level - this means we are blocked from openly helping you. In all other western nations we'd be able to help you, quickly and likely at no fee, because we could share data that we all collectively tax fund. In the meantime, please contact MetService or NIWA directly for this information. Both NIWA and MetService now compete directly against each other (imagine if we had two police forces!?). If this frustrates you - as it does us - you can email Minister Megan Woods (as she is currently reviewing this set up following an independent Government review that recently supported our point of view that this is wrong).

Kind regards
Philip Duncan"

Chrsitchurch to Te Anau Sunday 16 - Monday 17

Hi WW crew I’d like your thoughts to help me make a decision please. I’m driving a visitor to New Zealand from Christchurch to Te Anau on Sunday 16TH. My preference is to travel via the West Coast staying in Fox Glacier on Sunday night. I love the scenery of Arthurs Pass, the West Coast rainforest, glaciers, white bait fritters, Haast Pass and emergence into Otago and Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. I also booked accommodation in Wanaka for the same Sunday night as a plan B for traveling via the McKenzie if the weather was going to be particularly bad west of the Alps. There is rain forecast for both routes - obviously more intense in the west - but my preference is still the West Coast. I figure if it’s going to be wet then better with rain in the rain forest, big rivers, waterfalls, (but sadly no Lake Matheson view of the mountains). I’m picturing the Mckenzie with light rain, blustery or gale force winds, choppy greyish lakes and also no view of the mountains. What are your thoughts… is the heavy rain likely to move through quickly and begin clearing from the south on Monday and how wet is it likely to get on the West Coast. Thursday 13 before midnight is my deadline for free cancellation so I need to decide today. Cheers Chris

Hi there Mostly everything

Hi there

Mostly everything you are thinking re what the weather is going to do is fairly spot on. Rain will be more persistent on the western side of the Alps, it picks up in intensity from afternoon with heavy rain from evening on Sunday. This rain will clear away on Monday morning fairly quickly with sunny spells and the odd shower then possible.

Hope your trip goes well! :)

Cheers
Aaron
