If you have any questions about functionality of our website(s) or app, trying to locate maps or data, or have a simple comment/feedback - please post a comment below!

As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather.Ā You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Have questions of a commercial nature? Contact us directly here.

Thanks for your support!

Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nzĀ website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

1. How can the border of a southerly change be noticed in a weather map? For example, if in your video maps, it’s the blue polar line, what about other forecasters’ weather maps?

2. Why wasn’t a Strong Wind Orange Warning or even a Watch issued for Auckland by MetService last Saturday (13 September) in spite of very strong winds similar to 31 August, when a Strong Wind Orange Warning was issued?

WW Forecast Team on 16/09/2025 8:20pm

1. It’s usually measured by a steep drop off (or ramp up) in temperatures. The polar air circles Antarctica and is usually held in place south of us by high pressure – these same highs can also work with low pressure to ā€œsuckā€ that polar air northwards. We note that Dan Corbett on TV1 has also introduced the polar boundary (which is a measurement of ā€œair thicknessā€ at a high elevation (5km above sea level).
2. You’d need to talk to MetService as they are tax funded to provide warnings. We warned of the Auckland gales a week in advance, and we often are the only ones to mention damaging winds in Auckland in advance.

Cheers
WW

Interesting article from ā€œSevere Weather Europeā€ about the interplay between North and South pole weather and how they influence each other.
And how a stratospheric warming event is about to unfold over the Southern Hemisphere, pushing the Polar Vortex far off center, disrupting its dynamics.
https://www.severe-weather.eu/global-weather/south-polar-vortex-stratospheric-warming-event-weather-winter-impact-usa-canada-fa/
Maybe you can explain that a bit more in one of your climate videos?
Keep up the wonderful work! Carla.

you guys are awesome guys. do you think rainfall forecasts totals might break in local places tonight in heavy downpours, thunderstorms? heavy rain watch in place too.

Ray on 10/09/2025 9:05pm

At top of page for New Plymouth it says south easterlies but in hourly forecast it says west south west so which is correct!!!

WW Forecast Team on 10/09/2025 11:00pm

Hi Ray, sorry I can’t see what you’re seeing – it says westerlies, turning south-east. There’s low pressure coming into the North Island on Friday – that means all 360 degrees of wind directions are possible in some parts of the North Island for a time.

If it’s confusing at WW, please visit https://www.ruralweather.co.nz/forecasts/New%20Plymouth,%20Taranaki and you can see it more clearly how W winds today turn E tonight, then SE, then S tomorrow, before SW again on Friday PM.

Cheers

Have a party in Auckland on Sat! Forecast seems to be changing every few hours with the latest showing light rain across the morning through to early arvo. When will we have a clearer idea of whats going to happen? Love your work

WW Forecast Team on 9/09/2025 2:32am

Hi James, check out my video today – looks a bit showery with SW winds picking up at times. With this sort of set up it takes until closer to the day to lock it in (due to the low itself moving through on Friday) but SW winds after a low at this time of year can be gusty with showers. Thanks for the support and good luck for Saturday!

I just wanted to know what the following wind terms mean:
Blustery, fresh, strong, brisk, breezy, fairly breezy, gale, severe gale, etc. What are the differences between all of these?

WW Forecast Team on 6/09/2025 7:47am

Hi there, you can find the wind speeds that connect with those terms in the hourly section of the forecast from any day. At some point we’ll get more info on our site about things like this.
Cheers
– WW
