high risk

metservice has a high risk of thunderstorms for auckland tommorow morning. and i dont know why. please explain to me? cause we have had plenty of thunder this week.

Hi there Probably best to ask

Hi there

Probably best to ask them about their thunderstorm outlook I would think?

There may be a risk about Auckland, looking higher for Northland. Either way that front is starting to weaken a little as it approaches. We'll have to wait and see!

Cheers

Naysayers

Hi guys. I don't know what many people's problems are with your forecasts. You had your rain percentage indicator jump hugely for 7am this morning and it started raining outside my front door at 6.48am. 12 minutes out for a prediction - pretty damn good in my opinion! If you could make it hold off for about another half-an-hour whilst I walk to work though, that would be great. Couple of extra thunderstorms wouldn't go amiss either...... Continuing great work will be appreciated!

Weather in Kumeu on 16th November

Hi WW team :) One of my work colleagues is getting married this weekend so of course we're all hoping the weather behaves on their big day. What is the current outlook? Thanks!

Hi there Looks like a mostly

Hi there

Looks like a mostly sunny morning then some cloud at times from afternoon. There may be a brief shower or two from afternoon but these look to be mainly staying south of Auckland so hopefully a dry day for you guys.

Winds moderate from the northwest and a high of 21 to 22 degrees.

Cheers
Aaron

rain

it was raining heavly when it was thundering this morning. and its still raining now i thought it was gonna clear up but hasnt yet.

Thunderstorms and Hail

Hi At 6am this morning your weather for today predicted heavy rain , thunderstorms and hail for Auckland. Ive checked it again at 9am and it says showers clearing. Has the more severe weather moved elsewhere now? My children are climbing the trees at tree adventures in woodhill today and i was worried about the severe weatther!

east

it was thundering here in east auckland. some hail and heavy rain too. must of been a isolated thudnerstorm dont you think

The isolated thunderstorms

The isolated thunderstorms have now mostly passed (around 7 to 8amam). Hopefully no more thunderstorms for them and only increasing sunny spells today :)

Cheers

thunder

hey weatherwatch it was thundering here in east auckland south east with hail ,heavy rain . but no where else. just like yesterdays thunderstorms it was raining elsewhere but not here. sunday we had a bit of rain but not much with that storm so odd. but this morning was quite awesome.

Exactly. Auckland is big,

Exactly. Auckland is big, thunderstorms are small. When will people realise that it might not affect them directly but will affect someone 5kms down the road from them. Can't blame the forecast as it was correct. Well done Weatherwatch for getting the forecast right time after time even when it's hard to predict weather like thunderstorms.

true

weatherwatch nz tells us that the storms can be isolate. some people just dont believe that and think " no they wont be isolated. they will be widespread." weatherwatch nz was right. the storms was isolated. i managed to hear thunder from all the storms from sunday, monday and tuesday.

odd

hi here in east auckland its been cloudy the whole day. then at 2pm i heard 2-5 rumbles of thunder. but no rain. why didnt it rain when it started thundering at 2pm? was it a hunderstorm without rain or what? just asking.

I didn't even know there was

I didn't even know there was a thunderstorm yesterday as it was that far east, so when I looked at the forecast I thought it was all wrong, but in fact it was totally correct, just for certain parts of Auckland, not where I was exactly.

You were just out of the

You were just out of the rain, the rain was a touch more to the east. Check out this radar animation here:

https://www.metservice.com/maps-radar/rain-radar/auckland-24hr

You can see the rain mostly sticks just out to the east of Auckland.

Cheers
Aaron

thanks

thanks alot. but at least i was close enough to hear the thunder. I see another round of thunderstorms is possible tommorow cool.

Frost

Is Frost predicted for Cust Canterbury tonight? Im away from home and have hundreds of plants I would need to travel and cover. Thanks

Hi there, you should try our

Hi there, you should try our new website www.RuralWeather.co.nz as we do have a Frost Forecaster (beta mode). It's still a work in progress but gives you nice graphs specifically for your location.  (pleaste note it may take first time users 10 seconds to load all the data first time you use it). At this stage frosts don't look too likely with lows down around 6 or 7 degrees (maybe a couple lower in more sheltered areas).

Noticing something here

Hello WW I've been seeing a lot of referencing to MetService for storm info. Why the change? You all have been outstanding in your forecasting in the past years I've relied on you for weather reports. Does this mean we need to make a transition to their site? Help a supporter understand. Thanks Team.

Hi there, NZ tax payers fund

Hi there, NZ tax payers fund thunderstorm outlooks via MetService. We will be including them on our website and app at some time in 2020 so you don't have to go to two websites. :) With MetService now being aggressively commercially taken on by Niwa, another tax funded agency, we are throwing more public support towards MetService in some areas, such as tax funded thunderstorm outlooks and severe thunderstorm warnings. We don't believe Niwa should even be touching weather forecasts, let alone commercially doing it.

Cheers for the support

tommorow

you guys changed the forecast from thunder to just showers the other day. while metservice in their forecast for tommorow says periods of rain with possible thunderstorms? will there be thunder tommorow or no? just asking. had a couple of downpours here in east auckland already. waiting for some thunder. thanks

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your questions but we can't keep non stop replying to questions about our daily forecasts sorry - what we have published is our current best thinking and the hourly data is updated every 15 minutes on top of that. Weather is changeable - it always will be, so the forecasts show the current best thinking. Use MetService's severe thunderstorm outlook (not their Auckland forecast but their national thunderstorm outlook and warnings map) as well to help you make sense of it all.

Cheers,

WW Team

P.s

i also took a look at rural weather . nz and that has a thudnerstorm icon for tommorow. again sorry for giving you guys too much

sorry about that

sorry about that. i did see the thunderstorm outlook and we under moderate risk again tommorow. but sorry about the annoymous questions wont happen again. i always seem to rely on you guys since weatherwatch i reakon is the best forecasters ever. sorry if i been giving you too much.

i see that mondays forecast has changed to ocassional showers. but still has a thunderstorm icon whys that?

That's a mistake, thanks for letting us know! :)

tornado

will the possible thunderstorms in the weekend for auckland have tornadoes? i hope not.

A small spinup is possible

A small spinup is possible but the likelyhood of anything affecting you even if one does drop for a brief moment is very very small. Basically I wouldn't worry about it, more chance of getting in a crash somewhere driving on the road and we don't worry about that so much. Should be all good.

Cheers
Ww

thanks

thanks if any does form i hope they form as waterspouts out at sea. so it can be safe to watch them and not overland. i already experieced a tornado (may 2011) which hit albany. and do not wanna experience one again

Queenstown half marathon

Hi there, we are looking forward to running the Queenstown half marathon next Friday. The weather doesn’t look great at this stage, any further insights? Thanks v much. Renee

Hi there Renee. The good news

Hi there Renee. The good news is that in spring the timing of rain bands can be tricky within 24 hours let alone 7 or 8 days out, so there's a chance the rain won't fall duign the time of the half marathon. The bad news is that, currently, the forecast and data suggest heavy rain is very likely on the West Coast and that will 'spillover' into Queenstown. It's all about timing of that front - it may zip through early then clear and be dry, or it may linger and bring some rain - so keep an eye on the chance of rain (%) in our 10 day Queenstown forecast.

All the best!

Cheers
Phil

Thanks phil

Fingers crossed

i suspect spooks and sparks at the trust

i suspect spooks and sparks at the trust stadium will have to be cancelled due to the wet and thundery weather?

Hi there, we don't know what

Hi there, we don't know what their criteria is for it to be called off. Saturday afternoon is a bit tricky to lock in, more than likely it will be decided on the day. Keep an eye on our detailed forecasts plus hourly percentage/chance of rain for Henderson.

Cheers

Severe thunderstorms

Hi there any severe thunderstorms for auckland this weekend

Hi there, we do have some

Hi there, we do have some ingredients for thunderstorms this weekend, the risk increases on Sunday. As for severe, at this stage probably not - but worth keeping an eye on MetService's thunderstorm outlook too as the weather will be unstable in many regions over the coming days.

Saturday 9/11

Hi team, We have an important game of cricket this Saturday. I see the forecast is changing and the precipitation % is dropping. Is there a chance of having a dry period on Saturday in Auckland? Cheers Allen

Hey Allen, thanks for the

Hey Allen, thanks for the question. Yes set ups like this one (the tropical airflow) can be quite tricky to be too precise with. Generally we'd expect some drizzly showers about, maybe a heavier shower or two, but it is looking increasingly drier for Saturday daytime. Take a look at Phil's weather video today plus the hourly % of rain in our forecasts and hopefully it will work out to a decent dry spell on Saturday for you - it will likely move around a bit more chance-of-rain-wise. We'll have more info in our next weather video out around 11am Friday and by Friday afternoon the forecast should be more fine tuned.

Cheers and all the best!

Weather

Please can someone tell me ? If Auckland has ever been over the Temperature of 30degress please I,m curious why ? I have never known Auckland to get that high and I have been here all my life 67yrs.I do no that it has been very close in the past.,but just not enough. Thankyou for your valuable time thanks. We have a debate going on about this M McVeigh.

Hi here Here's an older

Hi here

Here's an older article on WW from 2009, it has discussions on the hottest temperatures ever recorded around Auckland. Also have a read of the comments, there is some usefull information in there also:

https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/auckland-officially-reaches-32fee...

It can depend where you are taking the readings around Auckland as to the hottest temperature as there will be variations across the region regarding highs. That 2009 year (Feb 12th) has highs of 30.5 up to 34.4. There could even be a few areas where temperatures got a degree or two higher than that unofficially.

Sunday afternoon Muriwai

Hi, is there much point me holding out hope for a massive change in the rain forecast for Sunday afternoon (Nov10)?? I'm meant to me taking a couple of 7 year olds horse riding at Muriwai beach and whilst I believe the weather out there can be quite different from central Auckland it's looking like it's going to be very wet. Thanks so much for this service!!

Hi there Sunday will

Hi there

Sunday will certainly be a mixed bag for Auckland, there may well be a few dry areas in the mix and that will be the case for a lot of areas till afternoon when areas of showers / rain pick up in intensity again. But even then from afternoon the areas of rain or showers will likely have some dry areas still. So not straight forward. I would expect rain more then dry but take any dry areas as a bonus.

Whatever your decision hope you guys have a great day, and thanks! :)

Wedding whangamata

Hi there We are in Australia. We have a beach wedding Friday 22 Nov (afternoon) at whangamata. I have seen two completely different long range forcasts. One partly cloudy, the other rain. Are you to provide any indication of what we might expect? Best wishes Patrea Andersen

G'day thereYou would see two

G'day there

You would see two completely different forecasts as anything that far out won't be very reliable. Someone just below asked a question for Auckland and what the weather will be on Nov 23rd, I replied with the following:

"Not sure at this point sorry, it's too far away.

About 7 to 10 days out we might start to have an idea, then 4 to 5 days out is when we can start locking down what will happen.

Come back and ask within those time frames if you can otherwise hope your event goes well! :)

Cheers
Aaron"

So if you could come back and ask a bit closer to the time I could help you out more. Hope the wedding goes well either way :)

Cheers
Aaron

auckland rain

are we gonna get a lot of rain from the storms this week end or are we gonna get a little bit just want to know as this hehatwave has dried things up and my garden needs a good watering. looking foward for thunder and lightning if it does happen. thanks. and by the way you guys are better than metservice honestly.
