As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Thanks for your support!

hey ww team is the high to the east a good factor in the atmospheric river lingering around the north island for two days this week?

Mustang on 20/09/2025 12:20am

Hello, I was wondering why in quite a few recent hourly forecasts (specifically rural weather) there has been something along the lines of “0% chance of 21.9mm rain”. The quantities vary of course, but what does 0% chance mean, if there is a forecasted rain amount…? Thanks in advance for the explanation. We are WW fans and have been for quite a few years now! 🙂

WW Forecast Team on 20/09/2025 1:05am

Hi Mustang, thanks for the support 🙂 When that occurs it means the rain is coming after midnight. The way we get our data feeds means that overnight rain (after midnight) can display in the total rainfall. 0% chance of rain is because rain isn’t likely during the day (6am to 6pm). We are hoping to clarify this better at some point in the future.
Cheers

Hi. Is there some way of finding out where the local weather stations are situated? I’ve tried looking on the map in the app but it’s not very accurate. Thanks

WW Forecast Team on 19/09/2025 2:05am

Hi there Pauline – this is the full map of stations we display: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/maps-radars/observations/live-observations

You can also try http://www.Wunderground.com which is the actual host for the sites – and allows people to dig down even deeper.

Hope that helps,
Kind regards
– WW

Doug on 18/09/2025 5:17am

Why is there such wildly different forecasts from Metservice and Weatherwatch?

WW Forecast Team on 19/09/2025 2:36am

Hi Doug, we (all weather forecasters) interpret the data and communicate it in different ways. There are many ingredients that go into forecasting and we all produce different results due to that. We also use different technology/computing.

Cheers,
– Philip Duncan
