Over the past few months, has the inner AKL region experienced more severe weather, specifically thunderstorms, than in comparable months in previous years? Judging by the number of severe thunderstorm warnings issued by Metservice and the number of alerts via my mobile it would seem so? Or are they just playing it safe ito of predictions? You guys are definitely the go-to for weather info. Thank you!

WW Forecast Team on 9/05/2025 8:14pm

Hi Helen, yes there has been an uptick in severe weather/thunderstorms/downpours in Auckland lately (and Northland and other parts of northern NZ in particular). That has been due to a series of both low pressure areas around the north of NZ, but mainly due to very powerful anticyclones to the east of NZ dragging down sub-tropical air. This set-up often causes this weather but we don’t always get this set-up every year, hence why it’s noticeable now. Autumn, Winter and Spring can all produce a lot of thundery weather when more tropical air is mixed into the NZ area. Thanks for the support of what we do 🙂

Can you please tell these thunderstorms to come down to Hamilton.
Thanks

Sean on 7/05/2025 9:09pm

Interesting Wellington is forecast for 30mm of rain tomorrow, yet the latest MetService forecast shows much less than that (closer to 10). No rain warning which i’d expect for 30mm
